Warren's wrestling team saw how far it has come, and how far it still has to go, on Tuesday afternoon against a talented and experienced Corry team. The Dragons were defeated 59-12 in front of a gym packed by students dismissed from classes an hour early to support the team.
Though a tough Region 4 loss, the Dragons did see improvement over last year's 68-4 loss to Corry in another mid-afternoon pep match - that one at Corry High School.
Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger said he is "still disappointed in our performance.
"We'd have liked to have given the crowd a better show," Baldensperger said. "I don't like to make excuses but we didn't wrestle as well as we can." Anxiety and nerves, according to Baldensperger, played a big role in his team's lackluster performance. Citing several past Warren wrestlers as examples, he said nerves can drain you, they can ruin a wrestler's skill and conditioning.
After Drew Williams was pinned at 125 pounds, the second match of the night pitted Warren's regional-qualifier Amani Bosko versus Corry's Kevin Kerr. Bosko defeated Kerr 6-4 to register the first of Warren's two victories.
Adam Barirde wrestled a tough match against Corry's Allan Royek before being pinned with 25 seconds left in the match.
Warren would pick up its second win at 140, an 8-4 decision by Corey Barirde over Daniel Scouten.
Curtis DeLattre wrestled one of Corry's toughest wrestlers at 145, Jake Kondrlik. DeLattre wasn't able to defeat Kondrlik, losing 11-2 in a major decision, but Baldensperger said of all the wrestlers he was happiest with his performance.
"Curt wrestled well against Kondrlik," Baldensperger said. "He gave up an early takedown that changed the tone of the match."
"I don't guarantee a whole lot, but we will be beating some of those (Corry) kids come February," said Baldensperger.
Warren competes Friday and Saturday at the Jamestown Holiday Classic Wrestling Tournament at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. Wrestling starts at 2 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday with the finals and consolation finals set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
