Head Of The Class

Shawn Keener II, a 2009 graduate of Sheffield Area High School, has been accepted to the Johnson & Wales University Cutlery School at Providence, R.I. While at Sheffield, he played football and basketball for four years. He is the son of Shawn Keener of South Carolina and Amy and John Bloom of Clarendon.

Fifty-eight students were expected to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this month. Those expected to graduate with an associate's degree are petroleum technology major Kelley Moyer of Warren. Other students anticipated to graduate are Danielle Marie Salsgiver, a biology and biology education 7-12 major from Clarendon; Audrey M. Darling, an elementary education major from Russell; Katherine Pitner, a criminal justice major from Sugar Grove; Claudia Bernat, an applied mathematics and mathematics education 7-12 major from Tidioute; Erin L. Baxter, an environmental studies major; and Sara Hennessy and Rachel A. Thayer, both social sciences majors from Warren.

Jonathan Wiler, son of Linda and James Burk III of Warren and the Rev. Terry and Cindee Wiler of Gladys, Va., recently received his master of arts degree in French from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is a 1988 graduate of Youngsville High School and a 1992 graduate of Grove City College where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. He is a substitute teacher for the Duval County Schools in Jacksonville, Fla., where he resides.

Michael Stephen Peroski, son of Ann and Stephen Peroski of Warren, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Allegheny College, Meadville. Phi Beta Kappa is a national organization which, since its founding in 1776, seeks to promote academic scholarship by identifying and honoring the very best undergraduate students at select educational institutions. Students are selected on the basis of an exemplary academic record in many disciplines.

Peroski also received the Cornerstone Award at Allegheny College. The award was created to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding seniors who have contributed positively to the Allegheny community. The recipients are chosen on the basis of leadership, community involvement, and academic accomplishments throughout their tenure at Allegheny.

He is currently finishing a double major in biochemistry and philosophy. At Allegheny, Peroski serves as a resident advisor, bioethics chair of the pre-health club, co-president of Model NATO, and co-president of Model UN. He plans to attend medical school.
