Two separate fires kept firefighters busy around the county Wednesday.

An early afternoon fire in Conewango Township destroyed a storage barn and extended into a portion of surrounding brush.

The barn, located on the 100 Porter Run Rd. property of Scott Jenkinson, was fully involved when crews arrived around 1:30 p.m., according to Starbrick Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Tim Wiltsie.

"Despite quick action of the companies, there was no way we could have saved it," said Wiltsie.

Wiltsie estimated that about five acres of brush, owned by Jenkinson and a neighbor, was damaged during the fire.

"With the wind and radiant heat, it set some leaves on fire," explained Wiltsie.

The barn took approximately 30 to 40 minutes to get under control, said Wiltsie, while the brush took close to four hours.

Though the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, Jenkinson said he had a small stove burning in the barn, which may have attributed to the blaze.

"It doesn't sound suspicious," said Wiltsie.

Starbrick, Glade, Pleasant, North Warren and Youngsville volunteer fire departments responded to the barn fire. Garland, Wrightsville, Sugar Grove, Lander and Russell volunteer fire departments responded to the brush fire.

Another fire on Bauer Hill Rd. in Glade Township was caused by an electric transformer failure.

Glade Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Terry Carlson said it would cost between $15,000 and $20,000 to replace the unit.

There was no damage to the support pipe and nothing suspicious to indicate it was intentional.

The fire occurred on private property, Carlson said, belonging to Bill Fehr of Golden, Colo.

No injuries were reported at either fire.
