Donald H. Huck, 85, of 9 Lansing Street, N. Warren, Pa. died Monday morning, November 16, 2009 at the Golden LivingKinzua after a 14month battle with brain cancer. He was born May 12, 1924 in Warren, Pa. to the late Emmet Phillip and Margaret Dalrymple Huck. Don was a 1942 graduate of Warren High School and competed March 29, 1941 in the Pennsylvania State Music Competition where he won 1st place in the Coronet Solos. At the age of 14, he was made a member of the Senior High School Band under the direction of the late Harry Summers.
He was an extremely accomplished musician and could play by ear numerous instruments. After graduation, he was drafted in the U.S. Navy serving during World War II as a Radarman 3rd Class. He served with the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Aldebaran. While in Bootcamp, (Great Lakes, Ill.), he sang in the choir company and sang on the radio show "Meet Your Navy."
After the war, Don graduated from the Bliss Electrical School of Takoma Park, Md. and then worked for the former Sylvania Company, Warren, Pa. He was a North Warren Volunteer Fire Dept. Member from 1950 to 1954. Don then moved to Waterford, (Summit Twp.), Pa. where he resided for 28 years working as superintendent at the former Applied Plastics Co which was moved to Lake City, Pa. under the name of OwensIllinois. He also was employed with the Corry Memorial Hospital as Personnel Director and retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Warren State Hospital where he was their Labor Relations Coordinator. While he lived in Summit Twp., Don was a member of the Penn Ohio Model A Ford Club and owned a 1930 Model A Ford Roadster. He was CoFounder and director of the Erie Chapter of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. He and his wife were members of the Erie Western Style Squaredancing Club and the Erie Family Campers. He was director of the Summit Twp. and the Russell, Pa. United Methodist Churches Choirs. Upon returning back to Warren, he and his wife built a log cabin on Kiel Road. He was a former member of the Warren Chapter of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., a member of the Kinzua Aeronautics Club where he flew model radio controlled airplanes. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed camping and traveling to every state of the union except Hawaii.
Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marian Beckwith Huck whom he married June 18, 1946 in Russell, Pa., 4 Children Dan Huck and wife, Marsha of Waterford, Pa., Bill Huck and wife, Terri of McDonald, Pa., Susan Decker and husband, Joel of Spokane, Wash., Greg Huck and wife, Kari of Waterford, Pa.,
One Sister Helen Chase Mead of N. Warren, Pa., 1 Brother Robert E. Huck and wife, Jane of Mt. Joy, Pa., 10 Grandchildren Craig, Bradley, Adam, Georgia and Benjamin Huck, Kelly Moreau, Julie Curry, Darci Brubaker, Sarah Olney, Heidi Decker, 8 Great Grandchildren Joel, Coleman and Sadie Huck, Ethan, Alanna, Aviendha Moreau, Hannah Brubaker, Paige Olney, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 Brother Norman Huck. Friends may call at the North Warren Presbyterian Church, 200 S. State St., N. Warren, Pa. on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 12:30 to 2:00 P.M. when a funeral service will be conducted there with Rev. Burfoot "Buddy" Ward, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Russell, Pa. where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Clarendon/Sheffield V.F.W. Funeral Detail and the U.S. Navy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Warren Public Library Association, 205 Market Street, Warren, Pa. 16365 or the North Warren Volunteer Fire Dept., S. State Street, Warren, Pa. 16365. The Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of funeral arrangements.
