Business owner helping local students get online

POSTED: November 11, 2009

Local students could win free computers, thanks to an area business.

Darr Web Solutions Owner Buster Darr said he plans to give away one free computer system each month to a student within Warren County.

Darr said he had a couple of computers sitting around which he thought about selling.

"Then I thought, 'Why?' when I can do something for the community," he said.

Darr said he first had the idea in late September, has already given one away for October and is accepting November entries.

For October, Darr said he received 40 entries.

The contest is open for any student registered in Warren County School District or Tidioute Charter School, Darr said, including homeschoolers.

Students can register online or over the phone, Darr said.

When the drawing closes, Darr said he puts the tickets in a bowl and pulls out the winner.

Darr said he hopes to continue giving away computers indefinitely and is currently giving away refurbished ones which he can pick up fairly cheaply.

One needed a new hard drive, Darr said.

"A lot of families can't afford to buy even used ones needed for school," he said. "My kids use them a lot for research and homework."

According to WarrenPa.net, which is owned and operated by Darr Web Solutions, Tess Parmenter of Russell Elementary was the initial winner.

The website stated November's system will be a Compaq Presario and entries will close at 9 p.m. Nov. 28.

Students can sign up at www.WarrenPa.net or calling 723-4597 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Warren County School District Director of Instructional Technology/Communications Amy Stewart said neither the website, nor the offer are either affiliated or sanctioned by the district. She said there are concerns on the district's end about the giveaway.

The site is clearly not designed for children, Stewart said, and asks for them to enter personally identifiable information.

"What he's trying to do I think is a good thing," she said. "He's not going about it in the right way."

Stewart said the district is neither supporting nor bashing the promotion.

"We're in the business of education," she said.

Darr is not the only person doing this type of thing, Stewart said, and it's not a crime.
