Family Services: doing what works for families

POSTED: November 7, 2009

Historical photographs and framed newspaper clippings hanging in the lobby of Family Services attest to the generations of people that have been helped by the charitable organization, as well as to the dedication of staff and volunteers who have devoted themselves to its mission. Its tradition of supporting the health and well-being of Warren County stretches back to its inception as the Children's Aid Society in 1889 and continues to this day in its provision of counseling, substance abuse services, and support groups. Approximately 150 people each week seek help at Family Services and the ripple effect of that action benefits even more in the home, workplace, and school.

"Family Services helps people solve problems and live happier lives," says Executive Director and Therapist Gary Lester. "Counseling is provided by professionals with advanced degrees. They coach people in skills for coping, communicating, and problem-solving-commonsense things that work. Since every person is unique, counselors personalize treatment to meet the unique needs of each individual, couple, or family."

Some of the common issues that people seek help with are marriage conflicts, the loss of a loved one, divorce, depression, anxiety, family tension, problems at school or work, substance abuse, low self-esteem, stress, and children's issues.

"A good rule of thumb to decide when counseling is appropriate is when a person feels stuck in a situation or that they have run out of options," says Lester. "A counselor helps people resolve problems, come to terms with difficult issues, and move forward in life."

A long-standing partnership between Family Services and the United Fund ensures that these important services remain accessible to everyone.

"Many people don't realize that Warren County has the 3rd highest population of uninsured people out of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania," says Lester. "This is where United Fund contributors and Family Services provide a vital lifeline to this community. Because of the generosity of others, these people get the help they need."

The United Way Torchlight campaign is going on right now. Your tax-deductible donation will provide resources for Family Services and 21 other United Fund member agencies to assist people right here in Warren County. You can contact the United Fund at 726-0292 to make a donation.

Family Services of Warren County is located at 185 Hospital Drive in North Warren. To find out more about its services, please call 723-1330 or check out its website at www.fswc.org.
