Paris, Werner In; Turfitt, Oudinott Out

POSTED: November 6, 2009

The almost final results are in.

There are a handful of votes that could still come in, but the races have been decided.

The write-in campaigns in Region II of the Warren County School Board were very effective.

Jack Werner was written-in correctly on 1,324 ballots, with another few dozen variations that were accepted by the Board of Elections. Mary Anne Paris collected a total of 1,080 correctly typed votes, and several others.

Those two will assume the Region II seats held by Kirsten Turfitt and Katherine Oudinot who received 759 and 780 votes respectively.

Do you know that 3.7 million dollars is in this years budget listed as "stimulus money". Remember the money was to be used to create or maintain jobs according to our president. That's enough money to either create 73 jobs paying 50,000 dollars each or maintain the same 73 jobs at 50,000 dollars each. I asked where the money was going to be used (and I asked on two occasions) and I'm still waiting for a reply. Remember that money was a one time deal so next year (2010-2011 budget) will already have a 3.7 million dollar shortfall to be made up by taxpayers or through cuts. Might school consolidation be used as justification to save $ but it has nothing to do with that shortfall. I'd encourage everyone to review the 2009-2010 school budget and if possible compare it to the 2008-2009 one (I have). I also encourage everyone to read about DeJong and what they do (I have). Finally read articles relating to DeJong founder to better understand his philosophy (I have).

It's important to look at the budget prepared by the school board. I have and the major cost component is in wages and benefits. Whether 2 or 4 schools the tax determiner for the future will be the number of people employed by the school district and to date I've not been able to get anyone to tell me how many jobs will be consolidated. If we all think long term, the reality is that we really may not need any schools as technology is currently capable of linking students to courses regardless of where they physically sit. My major objection to the entire discussion relates to the 80 + million dollar pricetag upwards to over 100 million. Is it better to spend those dollars on brick and mortar buildings, or would just 10% of that cost provide the county with the technological infrastructure needed to provide students the coursework they want while at the same time, reducing the number of teachers needed. This approach reduces costs everywhere and thus taxes.

totheright, you must have gotten home early from the bar, right? You do not make any sense and besides that, you are just plain stupid. Ms. Paris seems to be an articulate person, besides her education helping her. She is also a business owner and a parent. So I am sure she will have the interests of all of the county in mind when she votes in future. MLSM09, I can see from your post you did not do well in school, since you cannot spell and your grammar is atrocious. MLSM must stand for Missed Lots of School Member.

We have 3 public and 1 private bar/club, at least 5 stores I can think of, so "totheright" you too are a bit mislead :) Just had to yank on your chain a bit haha.

All kidding aside, Ms. Paris will do just fine in her school board seat. She, like any current or past board member, will learn new things, and may even be able to teach a thing or two along the way.

Like I've said before, the write-in elections have Save Our Schools written all over it, but when you open the book and start reading, there's a much deeper and genuine story, and I think it benefits the interests and well being of current and future students of ALL the schools of the Warren County School District.

I did not say Paris is not educated. I said she was not at all educated about the facts of the situation, ie Sheffield being closed next year. That would have taken less than fifteen minutes of phone calls and reading to verify (disprove). She is confusing rumor with fact. Maybe now her election to the board, her attendance at board meetings and the time req'd for the job will help her to seperate fact from fiction.

Get out and support these students of Warren County. Christmas concerts, sporting events, great test score results, make sure students, faculty, and staff know they're efforts in and out of the classroom are appreciated.

Schools and community are a lot bigger than any individual on here, like it or not.

Oh, and Warren people, don't worry. Continued growth around the area will help the city of Warren, maybe even at keeping your precious city status.

Folks listen, you weren't going to save enough to cover the cost of trying to support the schools through traveling to events anyways. Adding to that, if you want b**ch and moan about taxes, and you don't get out to support the students of the county, whether it's by attending a game, concert, or even dropping a few bucks here and there in a can at BiLo or another local store, then SHAME ON YOU ANYWAYS! Hope your taxes double.

As far as Mr. Werner and Ms. Paris winning, their elections are one small step in a huge step to right a lot of the wrongs with the current board. They aren't going to be able to come in and "Sheffieldize" the place, we all know that. What they will do though, is have the voice for the little guy, i.e anyone outside of the city of Warren.

This is about getting the WARREN COUNTY School District back to being about the County, if that ever was the plan. If not, it is now.

Go Wolverines, Knights, Eagles, and Dragons.

Take pride in your schools peo

The voters let their wishes be known...at least in District 2... Don't worry you still have your consolidate at any cost representatives on the board too. It just has more of a equal representation now.

Let's here it for voter apathy! For all you home owners outside of Sheffield who didn't bother to vote, you deserve everything you get, as far as higher taxes.

Forget fivealive's comment about Ms.Paris not being educated, because she is. Not only did the voters speak to elect her, we don't have to be rocket scientists either; we live here. The school board has been discussing these same issues for a number of years, but now we have people on the school board that consider the families, not just the feasibility of it all. Ms. Paris & Mr. Werner are the 2 best people in "office" to do the job! I'm sorry you disagree fivealive, but your children must be grown & out of school. Congrats. Mary-Anne & Jack!

The voters have spoken. The ones who lost forgot that they work for the voters. They thought that since they were already elected, they didnt have to listen to the voters. A great example of democracy.

....of keeping all four high schools open shouldn't be ignored. It scares me a little to think of what the atmosphere will be like Tuesday evening. I'm hoping that people will be civilized, but I fully expect that it will go from a dialogue to an outright shouting match before it's all said and done. There is just too much emotion involved at this point, and not enough rational thought, not to mention all the rumors and misinformation that people are spreading to try to persuade people to join "their" side (and yes, I'm aware it's happening on both sides of this argument). We all need to take a step back and realize that the 15+ years of arguing about this has only put us in a deeper hole. The longer we wait to make a decision, the more it's going to cost. Both financially, and to our children's education.

You're right sami, there is nothing wrong with someone campaigning as a write-in candidate. I know Mr. Werner, and have had the pleasure of working alongside him at SAMHS in the past, and believe he will make a good addition to the board. Ms. Paris I don't know, and have no idea what her qualifications are. I understand why Jack couldn't run in the primaries as he was employed by the WCSD at the time, but where was Ms. Paris then? The people of Region II didn't seem to have a problem with the incumbents until all the rumors and misinformation started. The fact here is that ALL members of the board need to approach EVERY option with an open mind and come to a decision that is in the best interest of the ENTIRE district. I think everyone needs to realize that there is no way to please everyone. There are constituents of Region II that are in favor of consolidation, should these new members ignore their wishes? No, of course not, just like the constituents of Region I that are in favor..

There is nothing wrong with a write in. They have to have a certain number of votes to even count to begin with, and it looks like the public spoke volumes to the incumbents. I hope Ms. Paris and Mr. Werner are up to the work. Sometimes the other side of the fence is not quite what you expect. But, I for one will trust them to do what is best for the school and its students. I doubt any of you naysayers are even in the Sheffield area or even in the county, you probably all live in the city. Best to you both, hang tough and learn all you can to make educated decisions.

"Go, Wolverines..."

What a d-bag.

I say when the school board decides it needs to raise taxes next year, the first thing that should be cut is Sheffield sports.

Forget them staying engaged. I wish they would disengage from 4 Schools and the misinformation and try to really understand the situation the district is in.

And why should these write-ins stay engaged? The population who voted them in will instantly disengage once the consolidation issue is resolved. How many of these folks are truly engaged in the schools or the school board business? (And attending football games doesn't constitute engaged in the schools!)

Ms Paris felt she was "educated" about Sheffield closing next year. She didn't even take the time to research that "fact". It would have taken no time to determine that the board hasn't even decided to vote on consolidation, let alone consolidate, let alone have plans laid out for the timing, let alone have decided to close SAHS. If Paris is that gullible (or lazy) with this one fact, do we really think she is interested in being educated about the facts?

Praying cooler heads prevail at these next few board meetings. Hoping for the best, prepared for the (repeat) worst.

It's scary that they would get voted in, then people have to wonder if they will stay "engaged".

Many times this happens in school board elections and then because they ran solely on a "mission" they learn the truth and end up voting differently than expected. Remember Paris announced in the paper that this was the last year for Sheffield to be open? She was real informed with the truth. This is why I hate write ins. It is like line jumping, regardless of the others who did things the right way, they feel it is ok to cut in and it is usually only done for a "mission" but what about all of the other school board business? They have no clue about it and do not care to deal with it. Just wait until they are educated with the facts. I also have to wonder about those who were "educated" at the poles about how to do write ins? My only hope is that all campaigning rules were followed.
