Adelines welcomed

POSTED: November 3, 2009

Chautauqua Shores Chorus of Sweet Adelines International welcomed new members Audrey Stone, Ruth Dodds and Pam Ellis at an annual picnic hosted by new membership chairperson, Stacy Jones. On Oct. 26, the chorus traveled to Erie to spend an evening of singing and Halloween treats with Erie's Flagship Chorus of Sweet Adelines International.

The chorus will be a vendor at the Jamestown YWCA Mistletoe Mart on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14. Members will be on hand to discuss membership, to promote Rada cutlery and various craft items to fill Christmas shopping gift lists, and will raffle a basket.

Bookings for singing engagements for holiday festivities are still open; contact Sandy Grimm, chorus manager, at (716) 664-2200 (days) or (716) 488-9517 (evenings) to reserve show times.

The chorus is made up of women of all ages who have a desire to work together singing and promoting barbershop harmony with the goal of "Harmonizing the World with a Song." The group sings all types of music arranged in four-part harmony. Music is memorized with the assistance of sight reading, learning tapes and lots of practice and personal coaching. Vocal training and exercise are offered at every practice.

Barbershop singing is an American folk art, dating back to the beginnings of Tin Pan Alley (singers sang together on city streets in order to advertise and sell sheet music) and/or sometimes called "wood-shedding" (where early American settlers worked together chopping wood for hours on end singing four-part harmony to pass the time. It is now practiced internationally by choruses in all corners of the world. For more information log on to www.sweetadelineintl.org.

For membership information, contact Stacy Jones at 723-6585. The chorus meets at 7 p.m. each Monday at the First Congregational Church, Third St., in the fellowship hall accessed by the parking lot on Fourth Street opposite the Red Cross Building. Visitors and prospective members are welcome.
