Julius Caesar at Library Theatre

POSTED: October 29, 2009

The Struthers Library Theatre and PNC Bank presents the DeSales University's production of "Julius Caesar" on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m.

The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival (PSF) is a professional theater company in residence at DeSales University and the Official Shakespeare Festival of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The University is located in Center Valley, PA.

PSF's main season is during the summer months, June through August. Each season, the company produces two works by Shakespeare, two plays and/or a musical, a children's play and a free outdoor Renaissance-style Green Show. The acting company consists primarily of professional actors from New York and Philadelphia and who are members of Actors' Equity Association. The plays are performed in two theaters in The Labuda Center for the Performing Arts: the 473-seat Mainstage or the 189-seat Schubert Theatre on the DeSales University campus in Center Valley.

The Festival's signature education program is the annual Linny Fowler WillPower Tour, which brings a professionally-produced Shakespeare play to theaters and schools throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Initiated in 2000, the WillPower Tour is a professionally directed 80-minute production with sets and costumes featuring a company of professionally trained and experienced actor/teachers. For 2009-2010 school year the WillPower Tour features "Julius Caesar", touring schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware from October 7- November 20, 2009. Half-day programming meets academic standards, with curriculum guides provided in advance. A daytime performance for pre-specified grade levels of Warren County School District students will take place earlier in the day. This performance is the second in the theater's new Arts and Education program.

Julius Caesar is a highly successful but ambitious political leader of Rome and his goal is to become an unassailable dictator. Caesar is warned that he must "beware the Ides of March". The prophecy comes true and Caesar is assassinated. Marcus Brutus is a well respected Roman senator who helps plan and carry out Caesar's assassination which he believes will rid Rome of a tyrant. Caesar's friend Mark Antony provides the famous funeral oration ("Friends, Romans, and countrymen") Brutus and Cassius meet their inevitable defeat. Brutus, the noble Roman, whose decision to take part in the conspiracy for the sake of freedom, plunges his country into civil war.

DeSales University's WillPower touring performance of Julius Caesar illuminates the richness and dimensionality of Shakespeare's characters and the beauty of his language.

Tickets for this event are $10 for seniors and adults and $5 for students and are available at the theater office or by calling 814-723-7231.
