BOYS SOCCER: Knights stay hot in road win
By JON SITLER jsitler@timesobserver.comCONNEAUTVILLE - It was a good win for Eisenhower.
Against "a very physically, aggressive" team, the Knights overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Conneaut Valley, 3-1, at Conneaut Valley High School.
"It was a good match for us," said Ike coach Mike Decker, whose Knights are making their case again for a District 10 Class A at-large playoff bid out of Region 2. "We have been playing very well lately."
Conneaut Valley lost to first place and Class AA Warren 3-2 on Monday of this week.
At first, Conneaut Valley took a 1-0 lead late in the first half with Cody Houck's goal in the 36th minute,
"If you don't panic, you know you just have to score that one goal," said Decker. "They had another good chance (in the first half) that (Eisenhower goalie) Will Cole made a decent save on."
In the second half, "we just became a little more determined," he said.
The Knights outshot Conneaut Valley, 22-10, for the match, but held the Indians in check in the second half, helping Ike get back in the match,
"Jon Schrecongost has been playing very well lately," said Decker, whose second-place Knights are 10-2 overall and 9-2 in the region. Chris Howard and Alex Thomas, as well as speedy freshman Ben Perkins and Justin DeMontier splitting time at sweeper, held the Indians to one shot on goal int he second half.
One minute and thirty seconds in, Garrett Fiscus was fouled just outside the Conneaut Valley box, and nailed his second free kick of the week intot he back of the net for a 1-1 tie.
The go-ahead goal was a thing of beauty.
"We started down in front of our own goal, Will (Cole) got the ball to Garrett (Fiscus), who dribbled a fair amount of the field, passed to Dan (Lane), who chipped it over to Conor (Flynn), who chipped it over the goalkeeper," said Decker. "You could see it materializing. It energized our team and took a little out of them."
Flynn scored the third goal as well on a give-and-go from Fiscus.
Up 3-0 in the junior varsity match, Eisenhower - which next plays Warren at War Memorial Field on Tuesday - got J.V. goals from Shane Gerbec, Kyle Ordiway and Blake Johnson.
