Hill & Dale Gardeners invited to Jamestown garden program at JCC

POSTED: October 13, 2009

Hill & Dale Garden Club held its September meeting in Sugar Grove at the home of club member Mary Lou VanDorn. A guest and 19 members attended.

The group has received an invitation from Jamestown Garden Club to attend a Christmas program to be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the Carnahan Center at Jamestown Community College. Lunch will be served at noon ($6), followed by a program presented by Tim Rettger of House of Flowers in Erie.

Becky Brown led devotions. Refreshments were served by Irene Berg, Becky Brown, Lila Myer, Sue Russell and chairperson VanDorn.

President Isabelle Hanson opened the business meeting by thanking the hostesses and women who went to Rouse Home on Sept. 12 for garden therapy. She introduced guest Carol Ekert. In the absence of officers, Debra Robeson read minutes and treasury balance. Hanson read proposed programs for 2010 planned by the program committee. Carol Zimmerman has agreed to hold the position of secretary next year, and Kay VanOrd will be second vice president. Next year's program booklet will include member birthdays (without years being mentioned). Greetings were received from honorary member Elsie Reitz at Warren Manor, and it was noted that member Millie Swanson has returned home from Golden Living.

The next meeting will be Oct. 28 with a program on pumpkin carving/painting at Chandlers Valley United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m.

"Table Decorations" was presented by VanDorn and Brown. It included a tour of the VanDorns' Victorian home with tables set up throughout displaying seasonal table settings with special china and dinnerware, napkins, flatware and centerpieces. The group enjoyed viewing the home's period furnishings, musical instruments and John VanDorn's collection of clocks.
