Hollywood film staff riding in local limos

It's not every day that you get a telephone call from Hollywood.

Beverly Hills, to be more precise but representing Hollywood, nonetheless.

That's what happened to Bob Sears in early September.

Not long after, he found himself working for the new Denzel Washington movie being filmed in Emporium, Port Allegany, Turtle Point and State College.

Sears, a former informational technology specialist who worked for Blair for nearly 30 years, owns a luxury limousine transportation business in Warren. On Sept. 6, he got a telephone call from a company called Travel Corp. out of Beverly Hills. They needed someone to pick up three helicopter pilots flying into the Bradford Airport and drive them to a hotel in Coudersport. Sears agreed.

Later, during the drive from the airport, he discovered the pilots were working on the set of "Unstoppable," a new Denzel Washington movie being filmed in the area.

During the transport from the airport to the hotel, the pilots were rerouted to the film's production headquarters in Bradford. One of the pilots suggested Sears go inside and introduce himself. He did and received a phone call a few days later from Diva Limousine, asking him to work as an affiliate for the company, driving film crew, actors and writers to and from the set of "Unstoppable."

"They farm out their work," Sears said, explaining why he received a call from Diva. "It's like a referral. They send me 'travel tix' with the pickup location, who I'm taking and where I'm taking them to. They don't call, they just assign."

The assignments have made for some early mornings for Sears.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, he was up at 1:30 a.m. to have his passengers at their destinations by 6.

"I might be able to sleep in until 2:30 tomorrow," he joked.

Sears uses one of his three limousines for his work on "Unstoppable," a vehicle formerly owned by the U.S. government and used by the Joint Chief of Staff.

"They prefer using the non-conspicuous black car," Sears said, "even though the windows are tinted out."

So far, Sears has been assigned to transport the movie's head writer, Mark Bomback, and various cameramen and special effects artists, including special effects wizard John Fraser, who has been nominated for eight Academy Awards for his work, winning an Oscar for "Spider Man 2".

He has also been transporting various actors, including Victor Gojcaj, who recently starred in "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" alongside Washington and John Travolta.

"He's got an interesting background," Sears said of Gojcaj, whom he picked up at the Buffalo airport to drive to Port Allegany. "He spent time in a federal penitentiary. Tony Scott (the director of 'The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3' and 'Unstoppable') was scouting the streets of New York for real life criminals to help coach his actors (in 'Pelham')."

Scott was so impressed with Gojcaj, he offered him a role in "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3," which led to a role in his current movie.

But what about the Big Cheese? Has Sears had the opportunity to drive Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington?

"I was really hoping I would," Sears said. "But he flies in his own private jet with his own driver and bodyguard. I guess he's a very private person. He's staying at a private resort in Bradford that's gated."

Sears said he is enjoying his time working for the "Unstoppable" production company. He was told shooting for the movie will last into November.

"It has been really, really neat to drive right onto the set with these people," he said. "They are filming this right in our backyard."
