AOC on the move
On Friday, Oct. 2, the Allegheny Outdoor Club will ride bikes on the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga and Lycoming counties. The trail, which runs alongside Pine Creek through the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, is 57 miles long and runs from Ansonia on Rt. 6 at its northern end to Jersey Shore at its southern terminus. A USA Today poll voted Pine Creek Rail Trail one of the ten great places to take a bike tour. Participants will meet at Howe's True Value on Rt. 6 in Warren at 7:30 a.m. with a lunch and plenty of water. For information, call Dennis Anderson in Jamestown at (716) 483-2288.
On Sunday, Oct. 4, the AOC will hike the Kinzua Valley Trail, which runs alongside Kinzua Creek from Westline in the east to the Red Bridge Area on the Allegheny National Forest at its western end. This is an easy hike of four miles suitable for the whole family. Participants will meet at Howe's True Value on Rt. 6 in Warren at 1:15 p.m. or at the Westline Trailhead at 2 p.m. For information call Charlie Merritt at (814) 723-9212.
Psychiatry of aging
On Oct. 9, Warren State Hospital will host the presentation "Psychiatric Disorders in the Aging Population" from 9 a.m. to noon in the Israel Building Auditorium. The co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders, cognitive impairment and medical disease in late-life can make diagnosis and treatment challenging. This program will provide an overview of common diagnostic and treatment dilemmas encountered in late-life. We will review of the prevalence of psychiatric and cognitive disorders in late life, discuss the diagnosis of depression in the medically ill patient, discuss the relationship of depression with cognitive impairment/dementia, and review the causes of 'agitation' in dementia. In this program, we will also discuss treatment approaches unique to late-life, including an algorithm for managing agitation in dementia. Presenting is Ellen M. Whyte, MD. Assistant Professor with the Departments of Psychiatry and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. This program is free of charge and open all clinical and research professionals, students, trainees, as well as interested family members and consumers, as well as the general public with interest. 3 Continuing Education Credits will be offered in a variety of fields. Auditions planned
Auditions for WarrenPlayer's Jack-in-the-Box production of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4, at the Struthers Library Theatre. Production dates will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3; 8:15 p.m. (after the Christmas Walk) Friday, Dec. 4; 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. All are welcome to audition; no experience is necessary. Four men, six women, eight boys and nine girls are needed.
Movie Monday
Monday Night Movies at the Warren Public Library will continue Oct. 5. This event is free of charge and will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Slater Room on the third floor of the library. Thanks to donations, complimentary popcorn will be available. This PG-13 rated 88 minute film stars Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon and Jon Favreau. An upscale unhappily married couple find their exotic vacation plans knocked out by fog. They are then forced into a four family frenzy as they attempt to satisfy everyone on the Christmas holiday. As they count the hours until their escape they find long repressed adolescent wounds reopened as they re-evaluate their future together in this raucous comedy.
