Jammers split with Scrappers

September 3, 2009
The Times Observer

NILES, OHIO - Jamestown left the bats at home for the first of four games in two days, dropping the opener of a Wednesday doubleheader with the New York-Penn League's best team, Mahoning Valley, 2-0.

However, Jamestown rallied in the second contest, overcoming a late Scrappers rally to win in extra innings, 4-3.

Jamestown never could get anything going off Scrappers starter Clayton Cook and managed just four hits over the seven inning contest.

Despite the lack of offensive productivity, Jammers starter Holden Sprague did all he could to keep Jamestown in the game, allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings.

Mahoning Valley got its first run in the third inning after Tim Palinscar led off with a double, but Sprague buckled down and got the next two outs while keeping Palinscar on second. However, a two-out single from Jason Kipnis would allow the run to score anyway and break the scoreless tie.

The Scrappers' second run came in the sixth when Jesus Brito doubled and went on to score on a triple by Ben Carlson during the next at-bat.

In the nightcap, the Jammers built a 2-0 lead in the third thanks to a bunt single from Chris Wade that scored Michael Pasek and a Kyle Jensen sacrifice fly that plated Mark Wyatt. Mahoning Valley got a run back in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1.

Wade tripled in the fifth and scored on a Chase Austin sacrifice fly to extend the lead only to see the Scrappers again score in the bottom of the inning and shave the lead to 3-2.

The lead held up until the bottom of the final inning before Jordan Henry's two-out RBI single brought home the tying run and forced extra innings.

The Jammers didn't wait long to seal the win, collecting an RBI single from Erik Kanaby to put Jamestown ahead for good, 4-3.
