Letters To Editor

Highways

POSTED: August 27, 2009

Dear editor,

I would just like to comment on the deplorable conditions of Warren County's main highways. Two in mind are Route 6 from Pittsfield to Columbus and National Forge Road from Wilder Field through Irvine to Route 62 at Buckaloons. Both of these roads have been bad since last winter with nothing being done to correct the problem.

Heading east from Wilder Field drivers go well over the road even into the opposite lane to avoid all the rough areas.

I have traveled a lot this summer to adjoining counties and they all have much better main roads. An example is the major paving job from Cherry Tree into Franklin, a long rural stretch hardly a major road like Route 6, puts our roads to shame.

Since we pay more for gas in Warren County than anywhere else, I believe in the the state, PennDOT should be awash with liquid fuel tax monies for Warren County to bring our roads up to safe standards.

How long do we have to wait for a decent road? We're paying taxes for what?

Respectfully,

Jim Dailey, Dunns Eddy

Highways and bridges are deplorable all over the US.

The states could get to spending monies that have been granted.

Before the right wingnuts try to stop the programs.

KMartin, it will just make the drive that much more "fun", watch out for deer, miss the holes and try to stay on the road, all at the same time. The crews they have been using look like rejects, they don't communicate with the flagmen half the time. I was on a road not long ago and there was NO FLAGMAN and I went on the road, only to find around the bend, the work crew, in the road! I came to a screeching stop and told the angry foreman that there was no one where I had come from to tell me to wait. It was not my fault. They did not have a sign saying flagman, either.

Are they going to contract somebody real this time, or another fly by night operation that did the Old Pittsfield Road not long ago. i have never seen more crooked berms, and why do the roads get narrower everytime they are finally fixed?

The new berm starts, where the old chunks of pavement have fallen off. I can't wait to see how skinny the road will be on Rt.6, near the turn by the old rustic cabin restaurant.

When I called PennDot, I was told the roads like Rte 6 are great. Yeah, okay, they must not drive them. I feel like I am in a war zone, dodging bumps, holes and poor patch jobs. The road from Sugar Grove to Columbus was repaved, but not highly driven Rte 6, why?

Don't worry about the roads. They are already in the works. RT6 starts after labor day. You can't just get pavement and pave a road at will. there are steps to go through. Contacting Penndot directly would have answered your questions about these roads. Be patient. The fix is on it's way.

Yeah, I've gotten so I don't even drive on Route 6 between Pittsfield and Columbus anymore...I turn on 27 and take 426 into Corry. The road is RIDICULOUS.
