Field of Flags
The first event for the September 11 Project will be held Saturday, Aug. 29. Volunteers are needed to assemble the Memorial Field of Flags on the grounds of Warren County Memorial Park on Route 6 in Starbrick. The morning will start at 9 a.m. with coffee and donuts. A brief flag ceremony will raise two American flags that were flown at the Stryker Brigade headquarters in Iraq. The two flags will remain in place until the Memorial Field is retired on Oct. 3. The 3,000-flag Field of Flags is placed each year in memory of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
Volunteers honored
Attention all Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteers: The Annual RSVP Volunteer Recognition Luncheon will be held Oct. 14. Total hours must be submitted by Sept. 1. Those who have not handed in their volunteer hours should do so to 905 Fourth Avenue. Forty hours are required in order to be eligible for the luncheon.
Scouts explore
Girls entering grades two through five are invited to "Explore Until Your Hearts Content" with the Girl Scouts on Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hearts Content Recreation Area in the Allegheny National Forest. Participants will explore an untouched forest, learn to orienteer and enjoy outdoor cooking and crafting. Cost is $6 per girl. NARFE meeting set
The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) have coordinated a meeting with Sen. Casey, Sen. Specter and Congressman Thompson at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Court of Angels in Smethport (across from the Courthouse on Rt. 6). The public is encouraged to attend. Topics will include Social Security, what NARFE sees as the unfair Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) that was enacted in 1983, reimbursement of sick leave and other topics pertaining to federal employees, retirees and widows of retirees and loss of benefits. Polka Sunday
The Slovenian Polka Boosters will dance from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Ridgway Moose Club. Music will be provided by Frank Palumbi of Collier Township. For information, call Paul Leofsky at 563-7516.
YHS homecoming
The Youngsville High School Alumni Homecoming Committee invites all YHS graduates to homecoming weekend, Oct. 1-3. The weekend will begin with a homecoming parade and pep assembly on Oct. 1 and the homecoming football game (Eagles vs. Cochranton) at Mike Shine Field at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2. Alumn are encouraged to sign in at the alumni tent.
Activities on Oct. 3 will include breakfast at Richard's Restaurant at 9 a.m., an alumni dinner buffet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Youngsville Fire Hall and an alumni homecoming dance with doors opening at 7 p.m. and dancing beginning at 8 p.m. with music by "The Contels," a doo-wop and rock and roll band. Cost for the event will be $16 per person or $27 per couple for dinner and the dance (dinner only will be $8 per person). Reservations can be mailed to YHS Alumni Homecoming, P.O. Box 235, Youngsville, PA 16371; checks should be payable to YHS Alumni Homecoming Committee. There must be 50 reservations by Aug. 31, or the dinner will be canceled.
Safe driving
The Warren YMCA will host an AARP Driver Safety four-hour refresher program for those who have taken the course before in the last three to four years. Those who took the last course more than four years ago should check with their insurance agent to make sure they will still get the discount for taking the refresher course. Participants must have a copy of the previous AARP certificate and number on the morning of the class or similar documentation from the previous class. The four-hour refresher course will be presented at the YMCA on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Those age 50 or older who frequently drive may benefit greatly by participating in one of AARP's driving courses. The course is intended to increase personal safety by covering the basics of defensive driving and how changes in vision, hearing and physical reflexes due to aging can impact driving. New vehicle and roadway features and new laws of the road also will be discussed. You may be eligible for an automobile insurance premium reduction or discount (ask your insurance agent all drivers in the household may have to take the course) and there are no tests (written or driving).
Cost will be $14 per person, ($12 for AARP members. you must have an AARP card and number the morning of the class for the $2 discount) paid by check to AARP or cash to the instructor on the day of the class. You do not have to be a member of AARP or the YMCA to take the course. Advanced registration is recommended as class is limited to 20 attendees.
The course will be taught by Lawrence (Larry) Jackson. Larry retired four years ago after 28 years as a highway accident investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board. Daisy program set
Girls entering kindergarten or first grade are invited to the Girl Scout Daisy Days program series. Events are scheduled for Sept. 15, 22, 29 and Oct. 6 at the South Street Learning Center in Warren from 6 to 9 p.m. Participants must attend all four events with a parent/guardian and be new to Girl Scouting. Girls will learn what it's like to be a Daisy Girl Scout, make friends, and most importantly, have fun!
