Jamestown opens second half with rout

August 19, 2009
The Times Observer

BURLINGTON, Vt.. - Jamestown opened the second half of the New York-Penn Baseball League season in fine fashion Wednesday as Erick Carrillo and Christopher Shaffer combined on a five-hit shutout in the Jammers' 13-0 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters.

On a night it didn't need it, the Jamestown offense came to life early and often, plating runs in five straight innings after a scoreless first.

The rout started with a four-run second that included a two-RBI double from Jose Torres and RBI?singles from Austin Markel and Erik Kanaby. The speedy Markel was thrown out at home on Kanaby's hit to deny a fifth run from scoring.

The Jammers (23-35) got an RBI from Chris Wade in the third and a two-run double from Chase Austin in the fourth before exploding for four more runs in the fifth.

The second offensive outburst was highlighted by two unearned runs and RBI singles from Kyle Jensen and Ricky Orton.

For good measure, Markel later added an eighth inning homer, his first, to close the scoring.

Starter Carrillo got the win, pitching five innings and allowing four hits while striking out seven. Shafer covered the final four innings allowing just two hits and striking out six to raise the Jamestown total to 13 K's for the game.

The Jammers ended the game with a season-best 21 hits one day removed fom the NYPL's all-star game.

Despite being out of contention for a postseason spot, the 2008 NYPL?runners-up are looking for a strong finish to the season.

Jamestown will look for continued success against Vermont when it again visits the Lake Monsters on Thursday.
