Jamestown gets stuck by Spikes

August 4, 2009
The Times Observer

STATE COLLEGE - Any chance Jamestown had of a two-game sweep over State College went away quickly Monday as the Spikes jumped out to a 4-0 lead and went up by as many as ten runs in an 11-2 victory in New York-Penn League Baseball.

State College's Aaron Baker had a two-run home run off of Jamestown starter Skyler Crawford in the first and Justin Byler added a two-run shot of his own in the second to make it 4-0 after a pair. Jamestown got one back in the third when an Erik Kanaby groundout scored Nate Simon, but it wouldn't be long before things got even worse for Jamestown (16-29).

Jammers reliveres Ramon Benjamin and Kenny Fernandez pitched in the sixth for Jamestown - an inning that saw State College put up six runs. The offensive outburst was highlighted by sending 10 batters to the plate and a span of seven hits or walks in eight at-bats.

Carlos Paulino's groundout in the ninth netted the last-place Jammers a second run but by then the Spikes were already coasting towards the finish line.

The Jammers will hope for some better luck on Tuesday when they open up a series with the Stedler Division leading Oneonta Tigers.
