CRANBERRY - The Warren Boys Majors all-star team continues to prove its not how often you get knocked down - it's whether you get back up.
After losing its Western PA Qualifier opener Friday at Cranberry, Warren recorded a pair of wins Saturday and Sunday - defeating Mifflin County, 4-3, and Jersey Shore/GSV, 6-5, to advance to the tournament's championship game at 6 p.m. Monday against Moon Township.
On Saturday, Warren met up with Mifflin County in the second game of the round robin tournament. In that game, the Majors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Jimmy Vile connected on a two-out double to score Nathan Sandberg and Aaron Hoover.
Warren pushed it to 3-0 in the third inning when Ryan Gustafson connected on a solo home run, but Mifflin scored its first run of the contest in the fourth on a Drew Hannon homer.
Tanner Stanz got the run back for Warren with a solo homer in the fifth - a blast that would prove to be very valuable as Mifflin rallied in its final at-bat.
In the sixth, Evan Sebay led off with a single and Lucas McKay hit a two-run home run to get Mifflin within 4-3. Hannon then singled off the fence narrowly missing the tying run and Isaiah Keanes singled to put two on with nobody out.
After a strikeout, Hannon and Keanes moved up a base each on a passed ball and pitcher Casey Vincent reached his pitch count. Matt Hultquist entered, inducing a pop out to short and catching a Mifflin batter looking at the third strike to end the game with the tying run stranded at third.
Stanz and Johnny White had two hits apiece and Vincent struck out 11 in the win.
All that was just to get to Sunday and another nailbiter - this one with Jersey Shore/GSV.
Sunday's win was in come-from-behind fashion after Jersey Shore jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. From there, Warren began to chip away at the lead.
In the second, White singled with two outs and Hoover doubled to put runners on second and third. Kyle Hunt followed with a double to plate a pair and cut the lead to 4-2.
Jersey extended the lead to 5-2 in the fifth, but Warren had one more rally in its tank.
Vincent and Gustafson walked and Hultquist singled to score Vincent and cut the Jersey lead to two. White scored Gustafson on a single and Vile followed with a clutch two-out single to score special runner Hunt and White to give Warren its first lead at 6-5.
To earn the win and advance to Monday's title game, Warren again had to sweat out a tough sixth inning.
Jersey's Eric Huling led off with a single and during the next at-bat, Warren's Jacob Marino made a leaping catch on a line drive to the outfield to stop an extra base hit. Huling moved to second on a passed ball, setting up a tremendous Warren double play to end the game.
Vincent fielded a ball at third and checked Huling back to second before firing to Hultquist at first for the second out. On the throw, Huling broke for third, but Hultquist fired a bullet to the shortstop Stanz who was covering third and applied the tag for the final out.
Warren coach Mike Stanz also noted the outstanding play of Sammy Nowicki in the outfield as the youngster made two diving catches to save extra base hits.
Stanz gave credit to his entire team for the pair of victories, noting that Warren never quit despite being down early against Jersey Shore and that several players stepped up in key moments to secure the victories.
