Emily Hope Thomas of Warren graduated from The Pennsylvania State University on May 16 with a bachelor of science degree in wildlife and fisheries science. She graduated at the top of her class with highest distinction; earning a cumulative grade average of 4.0 over 4 years. While at Penn State, she was employed as a tutor, president of the eco club, a member of the wildlife society, and also earned many awards and scholarships. She has been accepted into the master of science program in wildlife and fisheries science at Penn State and has been awarded a graduate assistantship for the 2009-10 school year. She has been employed by the US Forest Service - Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Irvine since May 2005 and is working on research for her master's thesis on the effects of oil, gas, and mineral activity on forest songbirds in the Allegheny National Forest. Thomas is a 2005 graduate of Warren Area High School and is the daughter of Randy and Linda Thomas of Warren.

Elizabeth Anne Carter, daughter of Penny Hogg of Grand Valley and Scott Carter of Newton Falls, Ohio, has been accepted to the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville (UPT) for the fall term 2009. Carter is a 2003 graduate of Youngsville High School. Her high school activities included softball, track, choir, band and 4-H. She has been accepted into the nursing program at UPT.

James F. Holding received his master's degree in social work from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on May 20. A 1998 graduate of Warren Area High School, Holding received a bachelor's degree from Edinboro in 2008. Holding also attended Penn State University and Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Holding compressed the class work and fieldwork required for the master's-normally a two-year curriculum-into a single year, and took his degree with an overall 3.8 grade average, having earned a 4.0 grade average in his final semester. He completed his requisite internship at the Erie Soldiers' and Sailors' Home and passed his licensing examination in June. He plans to work with veterans in the future. A resident of Edinboro, he is the son of Donna and Jim Holding of Warren.

Joshua Hogan of Russell has been named to the president's list at Trine University, Angola, Ind., for spring semester at the main Angola campus. Students listed maintained a grade point average of 3.75 or better while carrying a course load of at least 15 hours. Hogan is a chemical engineering major.

Adam James Sixt of Sheffield, son of Jim and Mimsi Sixt, has been accepted at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for the fall term. A recent graduate of Sheffield Area High School, he was active in basketball. Sixt has not decided on a major.

Christopher Taylor graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh in April with a bachelor of arts degree in history with a minor in English literature. Taylor is a 2005 graduate of Warren Area High School and is the son of Scott and Joy Taylor of Warren. Taylor plans to continue his education at Pitt, pursuing a master's degree in history education.

Sarah Taylor graduated in June from Bella Capelli Academy (A Paul Mitchell School), located in Pittsburgh. While at Bella Capelli, Taylor was on the design team and was involved in fashion and hair shows. She will establish her career in Pittsburgh at Sergios Style. Taylor is a 2008 graduate of Warren Area High School and is the daughter of Scott and Joy Taylor of Warren.

Benjamin W. Abbott, son of Wilson and Nora Abbott of Youngsville, graduated from the college of Engineering at Ohio Northern University with a bachelor of science degree in computer science. On campus, Abbott was active in the gaming society. He is a graduate of Youngsville High School.

Tammi Zinger, daughter of Cheri Swab and Randy Zinger of Warren, was named to the dean's list at Mercyhurst North East with a grade average of 4.0 for the fall, winter and spring terms. She is a 2007 graduate of Warren Area High School and is in the nursing program at Mercyhurst North East.

Two Warren County students have received the Paul O. and Linda Keverline Medical Scholarships for the 2009-10 school year. The scholarship is awarded to students who plan to pursue a course of study in the field of medicine. They are:
Courtney Chase, a 2009 graduate of Eisenhower High School, plans to attend Edinboro University to work toward a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She is the daughter of Darren and Candace Chase of Miller Hill Rd., Russell.
Kaysie Foust, a 2009 graduate of Warren Area High School, plans to attend Penn State - Behrend in Erie to work toward a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. She is the daughter of Gary and Janis Foust of Pleasant Dr., Warren.

Chelsey Rashid, a sophomore at St. Bonaventure University, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester with a 3.966 grade average. Rashid, a biology major, had her genetics research paper chosen by her professor to be published in the St. Bonaventure student journal. She also was chosen as one of five students to be a school ambassador to travel to Naples and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in April to meet with several hundred St. Bonaventure alumni to share news of campus life. During her sophomore year, she was a member of the varsity cross-country team, co-leader of a Bible study group and was involved in brass ensemble and concert band where she was featured as a trumpet soloist during the fall concert. This summer, she is working as a pharmacy intern at Warren General Hospital and is employed in the pharmacy department at Crone's.

Six $1,000 scholarships were awarded by Ronald Holmes, trustee of the Youngsville High School Scholarship Fund, during graduation ceremonies in June. Recipients were Nicole Bost, daughter of Gerald and Cynthia Bost of Irvine; Leslie Clark of Youngsville; Taylor Hansen, daughter of Allan and Brenda Hansen of Pittsfield; Kyle Lyon, son of Donald and Christine Lyon of Youngsville; Kelsey Stoner, daughter of Dustin and Janey Stoner of Pittsfield; and Zachery Turner, son of Ronald and Suzanne Turner of Youngsville.
Selections are made by school officials. Since its inception in 1965, $57,850 in scholarships have been awarded to 75 YHS graduates. Tiffany Backhus of Warren has graduated with highest honors from Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor of fine arts degree in interior design with a minor in business management and a concentration in environmental studies. She was named to the dean's list every quarter of her four academic years and finished with a 3.87 grade average. She is the daughter of Debbie and Fred Backhus of Warren and is a 2005 graduate of Eisenhower High School.

A student at Warren County Christian School, Hammersley will have her name in the academy's yearbook. She was chosen on the basis of excellence and achievement.
