Esther Evelyn Strom Mortenson, 96, of 8336 Jackson Run Rd, Sugar Grove, Pa passed away July 3, 2009 at the home of her son, John.
Esther was born January 12, 1913 in Jamestown, NY. She married Axel William Mortenson from Ludlow, Pa. on October 10, 1954 in Jamestown, NY. Esther was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, aunt and friend.
Esther was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints, attending Jamestown, N.Y. Branch, Kane, Pa. branch and the Warren, Pa. Ward. She served faithfully in many capacities including Sunday School teacher, Relief Society President and others throughout the Erie, Pa. and Dubois, Pa. districts. She was very involved with fund raising for new chapel construction and other community interests.
Upon graduation from Jamestown High School in 1929 Esther worked for Empire Mutual Insurance Company, WCA Hospital and others while residing in Jamestown, N.Y. and San Francisco, Calif.
Esther and Axel worked sidebyside hog farming and instituted Mortenson Recycling near Chandlers Valley, Pa. She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening and entertaining.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Axel W. Mortenson; father Simon K. Strom; mother Matilda Sahle Strom; sisters, Elise Anderson, Ellen Hill Westover and Edith Vollentine.
Esther is survived by a son John V. Mortenson and wife Rebecca Ackley of Sugar Grove, Pa; a daughter, Mary M. Mortenson of Littleton, Colo.; grandsons Luke Mortenson of Lehi, Utah; Brady Hansen of Denver, Colo.; Ryan Mortenson of Warren, Pa; Alex Hansen of Boulder, CO and Jacob Mortenson of Sugar Grove, Pa.; granddaughters Amanda Hansen Coleman of Rexburg, ID; Sara Hansen of San Pedro, Guatemala; Melissa Mortenson of Washington D.C.; Lindsay Hansen, PVC, of Mauritania, West Africa and Andrea Mortenson of Sugar Grove, Pa.; two greatgrandchildren Parker Coleman and Marin Coleman of Rexburg, Idaho. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends and Family will be received at the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints, Warren Chapel, Rt. 6 East, Warren, Pa., half mile east of the Glade Bridge (8147262455) on Wednesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. each day and 10 a.m. prior to the service on Friday, July,10. The funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints, Warren Chapel, Friday, July 10, 2009 at 11 a.m. Internment will follow at the Ludlow Cemetery in Ludow, Pa.
