Letterman
Dear editor:
Calling all women. Where are you? Mr. David Letterman just unleashed a very cruel joke on one of our fellow sisters. I've been made to understand that any woman would never tolerate this ugly unjust treatment of any woman.
Sarah Palin's daughter was verbally attacked and abused by the thoughtless, unkind man. Where is your outrage? Is your lack of support because it is Sarah Palin? Why? She's a woman and I might add, a very pretty lady. Or do you consider her a dumb conservative right wing loon? I'm absolutely appalled at the lack of support and caring. What do you think her 14 year old daughter is learning about "The Sisterhood?"
Many women keep telling me, "We are not jealous of Sarah." We just think she's an absentee mother. Oh, please. Is it because she chooses life? Is it because she's a successful governor? Is it because she expresses her outrage about our present government? Is it because she believes and expresses her moral outrage about our values as Americans or does she make you and I feel a bit guilty?
I've always understood that since the 1960's that women would always be there to support other women no matter what.
If I ever need your support it looks as if I'll probably have to change my name to Hillary, get a college education, and become an elite Progressive liberal who speaks with a silver tongue.
No! I'd rather be a decent human being and try to help when and where I can.
"Say it ain't so Joe."
My sincerest apology to Governor Palin and to her family for all of the nasty things American women and men say. Especially your "sisters" whom I though had enough education and speak great English who have hurt you to your very core.
Sincerely,
Barbara Alson Smith
Warren

Morrison~on May 28th, the paper ran a personal ad from a member of your own community grouping President Obama with other presidents that have been assinated. You even made a comment about that on June 2nd to the article stating the local police were going to be handing the investigation over to the feds. My entire point was-where are you all when they are talking about killing the President instead of a stupid comedian saying a tasteless joke. And furthermore, I think Palin's daughter is 18-not a child anymore.

Guess that would be the difference between elite and elitist. Elitist is what I meant.

I'm a fan of comedians like Cosby and the greats who didn't need vulgar material to entertain. If Letterman wasn't putting someone down, he wouldn't get a laugh from his crowd of elite fools.

I didn't know that until I googled Sykes. I disliked her from the moment I saw her routine. She'd be a low life if straight.

Well, I'm not a big Palin fan. I just find the Letermen "joke" one more sign of how low this culture of ours has sunk. Wouldn't matter who it was about. There are lots of them everywhere, but he's the most recognized. Personally I'd throw Wanda Sykes and Letterman into the same alligator pond.

I am not a Letterman fan, and I was and still am a Palin fan. That stated, I think I am more offended by the fact that I am being reprimanded for not rioting in the streets against injustice for something as silly as a mix up. I do believe that children are off limits, but the joke was about Palin's oldest daughter who is NOT a child. To dig a little deeper, if you don't want your whole family under a spotlight, maybe running for vice president isn't the best thing to do. "a very pretty lady"? I'm all for woman's rights, but this is embarassing.

I remember the joke about Chelsea Clinton. Did you think that one was funny? or was it OK because it was said by Rush? For God's sake get over it this was a "late night" comic who made a distastful joke. I've heard a LOT of them on late night TV. He apologized end of story.

It was a bad joke. The man apologized. It's over. Maybe, Sarah should've stayed out of SNL during the campaign. It was fair game.

I don't watch very much tv and its amazing how inconsequential any of this is when you don't pay attention. Its amazing the world we live in today where people get all worked up over a bad joke. Turn off the TV and read a book.

Liberal Blago? He was the sacrificial lamb for you libs to take the heat off the Chicago political machine that birthed Obama. Letterman is a hack - watch the episode with O'Reilly on youtube. Nice you bring in Rush though, a completely unrelated person in a completely unrelated industry. Typical of you libs.

Liberals treat dogs like people....Republicans treat people like dogs... I guess you tightie righties didn't watch the episode with liberal Gov. Rod Blago. The 2 differences between Letterman and your hero Rush . Letterman is a comic and he name calls BOTH sides. Rush is not a comic, but he is a joke. You people are hypocrites.

Letterman gave a slap in the face apology the first time. The second was almost believable. He'll be using it for months by innuendo and being the victim of hostile neo-cons.

gracie..what's this "offing the president" stuff you brought up? The only thing I recall was years of such comments about Bush. I don't watch late night comedians, or listen to radio, but I couldn't miss all those comments for eight years of crying Dems. Besides...the President ran for public office. The kids didn't.

While we are all posting opinions here, I will post mine as well. David Letterman is a sarcastic pig. He is as sarcastic as Conan O'Brien is insipid. Late night TV has taken a complete slide into the garbage since Leno quit. As for insults about ANYONE'S children, I find them insulting to the intelligence of the viewers or listeners. I care not if, why or when Sarah Palin's daughter became pregnant. She is not the first and certainly will not be the last unmarried woman to become pregnant or give life to her child. She certainly doesn't deserve to be put down by anyone for it, especially by an unfunny, stupid pig like Letterman.

I'll be the first to admit I don't care what joke he made about Sarah Palin. I don't think he is funny anymore - he was once, but then he turned into an angry bitter lib, just like most liberals who seek to find other forces in their life to give themselves "meaning," like global warming, vegetarianism, or protesting war. That being said, his comment about Palin's daughter - any of them, I don't care which one - is beyond reproach. What would the public say if someone made a joke about Obama's daughters? Children are off limits in my opinion. And Chris, I'm sure you're only going by Al Franken's side of the facts, but he profusely apologized the next day, NOT after the pressure became too much to bear like Letterman.

You are so angry about Sarah Palin's daughter but you say nothing about other comedians or even when one of your own made a about "offing the President" where were you then??? Apparently it wasn't in your political party to make a comment then.

Letterman has never been funny. He's a liberal and a New Yorker. They exist to put down anyone who isn't one of them. If you aren't from "the city" you're just some ignorant backwoods trash. What if a comedian took up Obama's comment "If my daughter made a mistake I wouldn't want her to pay for it with a baby". I could do a lot with that one. Tune him out. That's how to get him replaced.

If this was said about the daughter of a liberal, you wouldn't have a friggin' word to say about it. Where were the conservative pseudo-feminists back when Rush Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton a dog? This isn't about women...it's about a bunch of angry, foaming-at-the-mouth Palin supporters. And to all the conservative men who are up in arms about this joke - you don't give a rat's furry behind about women, unless the issue is abortion, in which case you become an expert in women's issues. Stop pretending. This is partisan and you know it. The "outrage" stems from your lost election, not the alleged degradation of women.

If Sarah Palin was a liberal Democrat, Letterman wouldn't have said that about her and her daughter in the first place. Secondly, the national Woman's groups would have been all over him and he probably would have been fired. CBS is just as guilty for condoning his actions. Since people like this will never change, the best way to hit them is in the pocketbook. Call their sponsors and express your outrage. If enough people would do that, they might get the message.
