Marie S. Martin, 73, of 75 Andrews Ave, formerly of Panama, N.Y., passed from this life into the arms of her Savior on Saturday, May 30, 2009 in Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital, Buffalo.

A native of Jamestown, she was born January 7, 1936, the daughter of Earl C. and Norma Graves Swart.

She was the wife of Carl L. Martin, whom she married June 11, 1955.

Mrs. Martin was a 1953 graduate of Panama Central School and a 1954 graduate of Doyle Beauty School, Buffalo. She was a beautician at Bigelow's Department Store for several years, and operated the Manor Oak Skilled Nursing Home Beauty Salon for many years. She and her husband operated the Lakeview Ave. Group Home and cared for over 100 youth during their years working with them.

She was a member of Panama United Methodist Church for many years. Later with the Panama Baptist Church, she served on many committees, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was a deaconess. Moving to Jamestown, she transferred her membership to Bethel Baptist Church, where she kept busy in many aspects of the church, sang in the choir, served on the Stewardship Committee, Quilting Class and various committees at the Bethel Baptist Christian Academy. She was also a member of Harmony Senior Citizens.

Her husband, family and friends were her whole life. She especially enjoyed going all over the Southern Tier to watch her grandsons play basketball, soccer, baseball and bowling.

Surviving besides her husband, are five sons, Tracey Martin of Buffalo, Troy (Susan) Martin of Houghton, N.Y., Brad (Denise) Martin of Lakewood, N.Y., Anthony (Jennifer) Somerville of Jamestown, and Mako (Suki) Shimada of Tokyo, Japan; nine grandchildren, Aaron, Devon and Cory Martin of Houghton, N.Y., Michael and Matthew Martin of Lakewood, N.Y. Elija and Xavier Somerville of Jamestown, Taki and Cindy Shimada of Tokyo, Japan; a sister, Eloise Smith of Panama, N.Y.; a brother, Roger (Karen) Swart of Erie, Pa.; a stepsister, Joyce (Robert) Evans of Hudson, Fla.; a stepbrother, Allen (Mary) Neilson of Melbourne, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Marlene Swart; and an infant son, Dean Robert Martin, who died October 8, 1959.

The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Bethel Baptist Church. The Rev. James Read, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Open Meadows Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 24 and 79 p.m. on Monday in the Lind Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service in the Bethel Church on Tuesday.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Bethel Baptist Church or Bethel Baptist Christian Academy, 200 Hunt Rd., WE, Jamestown, NY 14701.
