Scholarships and awards were presented during the annual college awards ceremony held at Jamestown Community College's Jamestown Campus on May 9. Recipients, noted by their hometowns, included:
Russell: Dean Kuzminski, mechanical technology award; Nate Mahaffey, outstanding contribution to music award;
Warren: Ashley Jones, outstanding occupational therapy assistant student award; Paul Slagle, Carl and Viola Vanstrom Nelson Award.

Amanda Trimpey, a 2008 graduate of Youngsville High School and a freshman at Mansfield University, was selected to perform with her all-freshman saxophone quartet at the International Saxophone Symposium in January at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. She received the Doris Talbot Scholarship for a freshman marching band member who was actively involved in their high school marching band and was recently named one of the drum majors for the "Spirit and Pride of Pennsylvania" Marching Band at Mansfield University for their fall 2009 season. Trimpey is majoring in music education on violin and minoring in leadership studies. She is actively involved with the Mansfield University Marching Band, university orchestra, string orchestra, jazz lab band and is in a saxophone quartet. She received the bronze award for the Mountaineer Leadership Program. Trimpey also has achieved the dean's list for both the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters.

Tara Fredricks, daughter of Tom and Darlene Fredricks, has been accepted at Penn State Behrend College, Erie, for the fall term. A senior at Warren Area High School, she was active in cheerleading, track and varsity club. Fredricks plans to major in business and accounting.

Brynne Murphy of Warren has been recognized in foreign language by the U.S. Achievement Academy. A student at Warren Area High School, Murphy was nominated for the honor by Jamie Tagba, a German teacher at WAHS. Her name will appear in the academy yearbook. She is the daughter of Lorie and Dan Murphy of Warren.

Cody Griffin, a senior computer engineering major at Penn State Behrend College, Erie, received the Computer Engineering Academic Award at the 48th Annual Honors and Awards Convocation at Behrend on April 26. Griffin graduated May 16 from Behrend. He has accepted a position with ViaSat in Carlsbad, Calif., where he will relocate in June.

Kathleen B. Blackman, formerly of Warren, has been named to the president's list at the University of South Carolina for the spring 2009 term. To attain this honor, students must maintain a 4.0 grade average. She is the widow of the late Atty. James C. Blackman and resides in Bluffton, S.C., with her daughter, Anne.

Sarah Monticue of Warren graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts in music and English from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, on May 17. She is the daughter of Grace A. Backstrom and is a graduate of Warren Area High School.
