Johnstown man dies in Sheffield crash
By STEPHANIE HAMM shamm@timesobserver.comA Johnstown, Pa., man has died of injuries he received Saturday night in a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Horton Avenue and Center Street in Sheffield.
Sheffield Township Police said Russ J. Gore was a passenger in a Toyota Tacoma driven by Ronald Gore of Belleville, Pa., which was heading west on Horton Avenue at 8:33 p.m.
According to police, a Ford Explorer, driven by a 17-year-old Warren male, was northbound on Center Street and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Center Street and Horton Avenue. Police said the driver failed to see the oncoming Toyota and accelerated into the intersection, striking the left side of the truck.
The impact spun the rear of the truck counterclockwise, causing the right rear of the truck to strike a utility pole and flip on its right side, police said.
According to police, Russ Gore was trapped in the rear seat area and a rescue tool was used to free him. He was transported to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, where he was later pronounced dead.
After initial impact, the Ford Explorer traveled west for 63 feet and came to rest off the north berm of Horton Avenue, said police.
Police said the driver of the Toyota Tacoma and another passenger, Greg Gore of Huntington, Pa., were not injured.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, along with two other passengers, a 17-year-old and a six-year-old, were not injured, said police.
Police said an investigation is continuing and that charges will be filed against the driver of the Ford Explorer.
Police were assisted at the scene by Sheffield volunteer firefighters and ambulance service, Sheffield Fire Police, EmergyCare, and LifeStar.
Police did not release the name of the 17-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer.
