Food Preservation Clinic
If your home-preservation or canning instructions are out of 30-year old (or older) books, be aware that some of that information may be obsolete, inaccurate, or just plain dangerous. In addition, throwing away food that spoiled after processing represents a waste of time, fuel, and money. Make sure that your preservation process is safe by attending 'Home Canning Clinic and Other Ways to Put Food By' on Saturday, May 2 from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Endeavor Senior Center on Route 666 in Forest County. With a registration fee of $25 per person, the workshop includes live demonstrations, handouts, pressure canner lid gauge testing, and a copy of "So Easy to Preserve," 5th edition, the most current and accurate home preservation guide available; an $18 value. This comprehensive manual includes complete instructions and recipes for water-bath and pressure canning; pickling and fermenting; freezing, gellation and drying. Instructors are Bibiana Chestnut and Nancy Yergin, family and consumer science extensi0n educators for Venango and Forest Counties.
For reservations and registrations call Penn State Cooperative Extension in Forest County at 814.755.3544 by April 30th. Whether you've never preserved or are an old hand but want to update your knowledge, the Canning Clinic will get you ready for summer's garden and farmers' market bonuses. Eating well (and safely) IS the best reward.
