Tax day tea parties staged in Warren and Sugar Grove

By STEPHANIE HAMM shamm@timesobserver.com
POSTED: April 16, 2009

A crowd of over 100 people gathered in front of the Warren County Courthouse Wednesday, with signs held high and their message clear to protest government spending of tax dollars during a tax day tea party.

"Today I stand before you and with you, my fellow taxpayers, to protest the excessive government spending," said organizer Dick Campbell.

Asked Campbell, "Are you happy with this spending?"

The crowd responded with a powerful, "No!"

Terry Knepp of Youngsville attended the tea party to express his dissatisfaction over the way taxes are paid by the middle class.

"I'm here today because I feel the taxes should go back to the rich," said Knepp. "They've seen nothing but a break for the last eight years."

He added that people need to "accept the (past) administration created the deficit."

Other topics protested included the amount of the debt the government is accruing and failure to solve energy problems.

Speakers were Conewango Township Supervisor Ed Seebeck and Warren County County Commissioner John Bortz.

"Let this be the spark that lights a fire that blazes brightly all the way to Washington, D.C.," said Bortz.

A similar tax day tea party was held in Sugar Grove, organized by 15-year-old Terra LoPresti, a junior Sugar Grove Borough Council member.

LoPresti said she had to do something after seeing how hard her father worked at his job and watching his paycheck dramatically decrease following tax deductions.

"I want to help get it (the government) going the way it should be," she said.

Featured speakers included former Congressman John Peterson and former AMVETS state commander Gary Fry.

Peterson spoke of the government constantly using money to manage through the tough economic times the country is currently facing.

"There's no way to pay back these debts," he said.

The tax day tea parties held in Warren and Sugar Grove mirrored a number of tea parties held thought the United States.

Apparently no one noticed that bush spent you into bankruptcy and are only now protesting the spending to try and get you out of a recession. Asian appears to have some grasp of the situation. The rest of you can start by watching IOUSA and then graduate to some grade school courses on economics and government.

I attended the Sugar Grove Tea Party, the important observation I made here is that a very smart young lady that does not attend Warren County School District schools organized this event, which makes me beleive that there are youth in our county that have have not been mind washed by educators of our school district. I applaud and thank the citizens and businesses that helped her to make this event worth attending.

You guys can yell and scream and stomp your feet until the cows come home but until you come up with some type of credible alternatives to what the administration is doing now other than saying they*****and we're all doomed. You're going to remain fodder for jokes around the water cooler. Major reforms need made in every level of government. Here's a thought for ways that local and state governments and school districts can save money. Share resources. Instead of a supervisor for every township have one for every four townships etc.. Instead of having the purchase power of only one county or school district work together to lower costs by purchasing large quantities of items as multiple counties. and the list goes on. Any other thoughts?

Anti, enlighten us as to how we cut spending. Should we cut social security? How about medicare, medicaid? The defense budget? No? These items alone make up almost 3/4 of the federal budget. Please explain what MAJOR cuts you want them to make so our taxes can be lowered. Remember whatever they cut, we as tax payers have to be willing to accept the consequences of those cuts.

Ruth, people already know how we need to cut spending! You need to catch up with the rest of the classroom. Deslock, what about the fact that oBOWma has massively increased spending and continues to bailout his buddies at AIG and others? You hated Bush for spending! oBOWmas spending is on steroids compared to Bush!!! Wake up before it's to late.

All protests against spending that do not tell us how to reduce it are fatuous pieces of theater, not constructive acts of politics.

Interesting. John Peterson really wasn't worried about paying back the debts when he voted for Bush's budget for eight years in a row. What's different now? Oh, that's right--his party is no longer in power. What a hypocrite.

I wonder, did it give the protestors a warm fuzzy feeling when the politicians spoke at their "tax protest" rally? The same politicians who receive paychecks from the TAXES that these people pay? Does anyone else see the irony in that?

Not one dime to support foreign nationals or foreign nations. No amnesty under any name. States rights and individual rights of citizens comes first. The government has no money. It's all ours, and we should decide how to spend it. Borrowing from China and kissing up to the Saudi is a threat to national security.
