Warren County and Congress

Phil English

POSTED: November 1, 2008

1. What is the most important step Congress can take to improve the economy?

We need to undertake a pro-growth stimulus that focuses on lowering taxes and regulations to get the economy moving ahead again. We should oppose efforts to pass the largest tax increase in U.S. history, which is already incorporated into the latest federal budget. A tax hike in a recession will deepen the downturn and put the brakes on the economy, killing jobs. We also need a comprehensive energy policy to reduce costs through increased production of a full range of energy options.

2. What is your position on drilling on the Allegheny National Forest? Please explain.

I believe we can use resources in the Allegheny National Forest to address our energy needs while protecting the forest as well. We should insist that drilling proceed with the highest possible environmental standards and appropriate enforcement. Drilling for energy in the U.S. is key part of a comprehensive energy policy to make America less dependent on foreign sources of energy.

3. What will you do specifically for Warren County?

I have had the distinguished honor of representing a portion of Warren County for the past six years. During this time I have been an independent voice for our region and fought for tax relief for working families, increased Medicare reimbursement for rural healthcare providers and hospitals, delivered $2 million for the downtown Impact Warren project, strongly supported the Secure Rural Schools Act, and partnered with the community on Allegheny National Forest. issues I have a proven track record and am prepared to take on challenges of our region again. Now more than ever we need a public servant with the know-how and leadership to get things done.

In the next two years our community is going to face huge challenges. We must get the economy back on track and build the economy of the future, protect the country from terrorism, ensure a secure retirement, protect families from tax increases and improve the quality of education. As an independent voice, I've worked across party lines to make progress on all those issues, and I'd like to continue bringing that kind of leadership to the Congress on behalf of the people of Warren County.
