Mearl and Dorothy Howell of Pittsfield celebrated their 65th anniversary recently.
When they were married, WWII was raging, and this young couple decided to marry. Dorothy traveled to Norfolk, Va., and on Aug. 18 they left Norfolk to Columbia, S.C., where they were married Aug. 19, 1943, at the courthouse. A few days later, Mearl was on his way to the war in the Pacific.
They have three children, Susan Mack of Youngsville, Trudy Halfast of Spartansburg and Tim Howell of Pittsfield.
