Joanna and Dewey Mayes of Russell celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary beginning with Mass at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Msgr. John Lucas as the main celebrant, assisted by Deacon Joe Lucia and Deacon Ray Wiehagen. The Rev. Fr. Roy Schubert, pastor of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church in Sheffield, led the couple in a renewal of vows. The couple's children, Michele Huber, Melissa Mayes Rogers, Stephen, Gregory, John and Joel Mayes, and grandson Joshua Mayes presented the offertory gifts. The church choir provided music directed by Tammy Lent, with Joe Kavinski as cantor and Beth Boyd as organist. A buffet dinner was hosted by the couple's children at Praise! Fellowship Hall in Russell on July 12. A floral arrangement decorated each table. Aides were Bonnie, Lori and Sue Mayes, Andy Rogers and Steve Huber. The couple was married by the Rev. Fr. John Onesko, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Erie on July 12, 1958.
The Mayeses have seven children including Andrew, who is deceased, and 13 grandchildren. Guests attended from Allison Park, Altoona, Erie, Huntingdon, Kane, Pittsfield, Pittsburgh, Warren and Russell, Pa., and Maryland, Mississippi, Washington and Welland, Ontario.
