Teams Harp,, Causebrook and Cuevas Lead Play In Summer Basketball

July 17, 2008
Times Observer
MONDAY, JULY 7TH

Team Manzella vs.

Team Harp

The night’s opener was a battle of stamina as both Teams Manzella and Harp were lacking depth. However it was Team Harp (2-1) with no subs at their disposal that came away with a 69-51 victory over Team Manzella (2-1). Jeff Beadle continued his impressive scoring streak by netting 32 points for Team Harp. Also contributing for the winners was Mike Putney weighing in 19 points. Team Manzella was led by Byron Keyser’s 16 points with Elias Manzella chipping in with 12.

Team Kyser vs.

Team Cuevas

Game 2 of the night featured the blockbuster matchup of Team Kyser and Team Cuevas. Team Kyser (2-1) was looking to remain undefeated but Team Cuevas (2-1) quickly put an end to that, winning a close one right down to the end 55-48. Nate Sanzo and Marcus Cuevas’ 18 and 17 points were too much for the duo of Mitch Kyser and Matt Moore.

Team Barber vs.

Team Causebrook

The 7:00 matchup was a battle between Team Causebrook and Team Barber, both looking to move above .500. The game was tight until Team Causebrook (2-1) turned it on to take a 13 point lead into halftime and never looking back, defeating Team Barber(1-2) 81-59. The scoring machine of Carl Swan had a 31 point performance for the losers; while Nick Moore had 27 points and Jake “the snake” Weingart had 20 in the victory.

Team North vs.

Team Bernet

The nightcap featured a battle of winless teams trying to turn things around. There was a good vibe in the gym as we all knew someone was going to get their first win of the season. Unfortunately for Team North (0-3), the good vibe escaped them and landed squarely on Team Bernet (1-2) who just wanted it more. Leading the way for Team Bernet in their 51-39 victory was Brian “Yoda” Kinney with 11 points, and Doug Hawley with 10. The losers were paced by Michael Bovas 10 points.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 9TH

Team Harp vs.

Team North

The first game of the night was very anti-climatic, as Team Harp continually took the battle to Team North by winning in convincing fashion 80-48. Team Harp (3-1) now finds themselves in a three-way tie for first with Teams Causebrook and Cuevas. On the other end of the spectrum Team North (0-4) finds themselves in desperate need of a win. Team Harp was led by the twin Towers Mike Putney and Jeff Beadle with 28 and 26 respectively. Team North was led by the inside/outside tandem of Mike Bova and Tyler North with 21 and 15 apiece.

Team Manzella vs.

Team Causebrook

The 6:00 matchup featured the red hot Team Causebrook against Team Manzella who was on the rebound after suffering their first loss of the season. However the rebounding effort went stale as Team Causebrook (3-1) continued their winning streak with a 66-47 victory over Team Manzella (2-2). The win which vaults Team Causebrook into a three-way tie for first was their third in a row. Nick Moore continued his impressive scoring streak with 20 points for the winners. Matt Eggelston added 24 points for Team Causebrook. The losers were led by Elias Manzella’s 12 points.

Team Bernet vs.

Team Cuevas

A 56-43 victory for Team Cuevas (3-1) over Team Bernet (1-3) put them in a three-way tie for 1st place in the standings. John “Mox” Wells helped his team not only with 4 points but with assist after assist. The dead-eye shooting of Mike “The Nike” Schultz (11 points) and the human workhorse in Steve Biekert (14 points) had the majority of Team Cuevas’s points. Doug Hawley had 12 points while Dave Momberger and Tyler Bernet had 8 points apiece in defeat.

Team Barber vs.

Team Kyser

In the week finale, both Teams Kyser and Barber were hungry for a victory. The 65-63 victory for Team Barber (2-2) was hard earned and came from the heart. Leading the way for the winners was Cody Kyser with 18 points and Carl Swan with 19. Swan’s biggest three of the night came with less than a minute to go after Austin Alonge brought it within one for Team Barber. For Team Kyser (2-2) Bob North led with 18 points while Omar Laboy chipped in with 11 points.
