ANF cutbacks
Dear Editor:
Please be aware that I was born and raised in Wilcox, PA. For three years I worked on the Allegheny National Forest (1949-52) as an employee of the Pa. Game Commission. It was a cooperative effort between the state and federal government. I spent my summers as a youth swimming at Twin Lakes. In the late 1960's to the mid 70"s I camped every summer at Twin Lakes with my family. In 1980 I became campground host at Twin Lakes and then a year later I became campground host at Loleta. (1980-92)
During this time I researched the history of the Allegheny with emphasis on CCC activities. In 1997 my first novel was published on the CCC at Camp One near Marienville. I have continued my CCC research that culminated in a professional video on the CCC in the Lumber Heritage Area. I received two state grants to develop and complete this project.
All this back story indicates that I am not a do gooder from Pittsburgh who has no business butting into the discussion about reducing recreational sites on the ANF. On the contrary I am a concerned person deeply committed to local history.
I am deeply concerned that as a result of these cutbacks, the historical context of Loleta and Twin Lakes will be eventually obliterated.
If that occurs, our cultural heritage will suffer greatly.
Thank you
Mike Schultz
