Red Cross Holds Second Annual ‘Ride For Red’

June 30, 2008
Times Observer
The Chautauqua County Chapter of the American Red Cross held its second annual Ride for the Red fundraiser recently. More than 60 participants chose a 10-, 25-, or 50-mile route which began at Dods Hall at the State University at Fredonia and preceded west along Lake Shore Drive through Brocton, Ripley and Westfield. More than $6,000 was raised by participants and sponsors. Event sponsors included: Shults Auto Group, Wegmans, Jamestown Area Medical Associates, Hollyloft Ski and Bike, Farm Fresh Foods, and Acu-Rite. Petri Baking Products and Tops Food stores donated cookies, water and fruit for the participants. Philip Spinks of Jamestown raised $2,100 from his individual sponsors as well as his employer, NRG of Dunkirk, who did an employer match. Judy Langworthy, Red Cross Board member and event organizer, called the event a ‘‘huge success’’ and said she wants to continue to increase the participation next year. ‘‘I want to extend our special thanks to SUNY Fredonia, Dunkirk Police Department, Dunkirk Fire Police, Fredonia Police Department, and the SUNY Campus Police,’’ said Vince Horrigan, chapter executive director. ‘‘In addition, volunteers from the Red Cross Board of Directors, SUNY Controllers office, Harmony Hills Girls Scout Troop 108 and 238 and Sherman Girl Scout Troop 20 assisted with registration and reception. We could not do it without them.’’ The American Red Cross relies on the generous donations of the community in order to provide disaster relief, military family services, CPR and First Aid training and support to Red Cross Blood services.
