Warren Art League will host Nancy Yergin, outreach educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension, at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center, Warren. This is 30 minutes earlier than the usual start time.
Yergin will help those attending become more skillful and safe in practicing kitchen arts. A registered dietitian, Yergin is responsible for community education on health, nutrition and food safety. She is a certified ServSafe instructor and trains professional foodhandlers so they become certified in food safety as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. She has lived in Forest County for 13 years and provides outreach to Forest, Warren, Clarion, Venango and Crawford counties.
Yergin has a bachelor of science degree in dietetics and an master of science degree in human nutrition from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is licensed to practice dietetics in Pennsylvania.
Yergin teaches a three-hour training for volunteers who occasionally handle food for a fund raiser. For those who cook for crowds, Yergin will give a course on “Tips for the Occasional Quantity Cook” at the Jamestown Audubon Society,1600 Riverside Rd, Jamestown, N.Y., on Wednesday, May 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. This workshop is appropriate for non-profit food providers such as churches, fire companies, schools and civic groups. The cost of this training is $5. Call Sandy Pearson at 723-4812 for reservations.
For the art league meeting, “Feed Them and They Will Come,” Yergin will speak on the basics of food safety in planning for group events. Pearson and Becky Thomas will add information they are learning preparing for “Art in the Woods” art show and sale on Aug. 9-10 on the grounds of the Audubon Center & Sanctuary in Jamestown. Thomas and Pearson have been working with Yergin to insure a safe and crowd pleasing food offering for this event. Yergin is active in the Forest Area Arts Council which holds an annual Festival in the Forest and as such has good information on what pleases the crowds in her area.
The group also will celebrate the birthday of Lynne Myers, league president. An indoor picnic will be served. The league will provide napkins, plats, cups, beverages and cake. Participants should take silverware and a dish to share.
