Atty: DeWeese could get out of prison today

March 28, 2014
Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The attorney for former state Rep. Bill DeWeese says the Greene County Democrat could finish his prison sentence for political corruption this weekend.

Attorney William Costopoulos tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1eZtxT0 ) DeWeese could be released as early as Friday, though it might take until Sunday so parole reporting requirements can be arranged.

Costopoulos says, "The Indications are he's going to be getting out sometime this weekend."

The 63-year-old former House speaker and minority leader is serving a 2½- to 5-year sentence at the state prison in Retreat in northeastern Pennsylvania for using public employees and taxpayer resources for political purposes.

But DeWeese is eligible for parole starting Friday because as a first-time, nonviolent offender he must serve only 75 percent of his minimum sentence.

DeWeese was convicted in 2012.
