SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — A northeastern Pennsylvania man has pleaded no contest to charges in a dump truck crash that killed a brother and sister from upstate New York.
Thirty-five-year-old Wayne Kichar of Jessup entered the plea Wednesday in Lackawanna County Court to homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence.
State police said Kichar's truck went out of control near the intersection of Interstate 84 and two other highways in October 2011, killing 40-year-old twins Lynn McKernan and William McKernan of Rochester, N.Y.
Kichar said a seizure caused the crash, but authorities said after an investigation that his history with seizures and lack of action addressing it constituted reckless behavior.
Defense attorney Patrick Rogan said his client is "anguished" over the accident and didn't want to put the victims' relatives through a trial.
