PITTSBURGH (AP) — The former head of the National Energy Technology Laboratory has been indicted by a Pittsburgh grand jury on obstruction of justice charges.

In Tuesday's indictment prosecutors allege that 54-year-old Anthony Cugini (koo-GEE'-nee) of Pittsburgh hindered an investigation into possible misuse of his position.

Cugini told The Associated Press that he's consulting with his lawyer and may issue a statement soon.

Cugini became NETL's director in 2010. Last week an Energy Department spokesman said that Cugini resigned Oct. 11, after previously being on administrative leave. Spokesman William Gibbons declined to give a reason for the resignation.

The technology lab works to produce affordable energy and enhance energy security. The lab has research offices in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oregon and Alaska.
