PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Thomas Merton Center and Pennsylvania environmental groups are honoring author and activist Bill McKibben.

On Monday evening in Pittsburgh McKibben will receive the 2013 Thomas Merton Award for his work to alert people to the dangers of global warming. The Merton Center is named after Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, author, and social activist.

McKibben, who lives in upstate New York, is the author of the book The End of Nature and co-founder of the environmental group 350.org, which is campaigning for an end to fossil fuel use.

The event begins at 4 p.m. at the downtown Sheraton Station Square Hotel.
