Fire destroys 2 Pa. homes, damages fire department

October 4, 2013

MOUNT CARBON, Pa. (AP) — An early morning fire in eastern Pennsylvania has destroyed two homes and left the local fire department with extensive damage.

Firefighters in Schuylkill County were called to an unoccupied home in Mount Carbon just before 4:30 a.m. Friday.

They said the flames spread to a neighboring home and part of the building then collapsed onto the adjacent headquarters of the Mount Carbon Fire Co. headquarters.

Officials said the roof was damaged and firefighters got the vehicles inside out, but flames then engulfed the back of the building.

Crews from the department and surrounding communities worked into the morning to bring the fire under control.

Officials said one firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment. Both homes were destroyed. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
