NW Pa. diocese pays off $301K IRS lien on school

September 25, 2013
Associated Press

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania diocese has paid off a $301,000 federal tax lien on its cathedral grade school, which has prompted an audit and an ongoing criminal investigation.

Erie Bishop Lawrence Persico tells the Erie Times-News (http://bit.ly/1eGSxie ) that satisfying the lien on St. Peter Cathedral School is an important step on a "long road ahead."

The Catholic Diocese of Erie hired auditors after the Internal Revenue Service filed the lien in February for unpaid payroll withholding taxes in 2011 and 2012.

The audit is finished and has been forwarded to Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri, who is reviewing whether any criminal charges will be filed over the missing money.

Persico says he can't say more about the matter until Daneri finishes his investigation.
