Construction worker hurt in NE Pa. church collapse

September 9, 2013
Associated Press

KINGSTON, Pa. (AP) — A construction worker in northeastern Pennsylvania has been injured during a church demolition when part of the building collapsed on him.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. at Holy Name/St. Mary's Church in Swoyersville, Luzerne County.

Swoyersville police Chief Dave Laposki said the man was working an excavator when part of the building fell and covered the machinery in steel beams and bricks.

Laposki said workers rushed to free the man, using a saw to cut a beam pinning him inside the excavator. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Police did not immediately release the worker's name and there was no word on his condition.

Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were at the scene.
