He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator by the New York State Thruway Authority for 35 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Barker Hose Co., Fredonia, and a member of the Exempts Club and the Teamsters Union.
He enjoyed doing yard work and keeping his yard in pristine condition. He enjoyed fishing when he visited Florida. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and they were his pride and joy. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ione Carlson Schwertfager; a son, Scott Schwertfager of Jackson, Fla.; three daughters: Cindy Hull of Englewood, Fla., Cathleen Langston of Sugar Loaf Key, Fla., and Wendy Hartig of Selbyville, Del; five grandchildren: Bradley and Robert Nowicki and Shannon Jusko, all of Sugar Loaf Key; Ryan Langston of San Diego, and Brittany Schwertfager of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Robert Schwertfager of Fredonia; and three sisters: Betty Brochetti, Beverly Rux and Susan Korzeniewski, all of Las Vegas.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Donald, Richard and Raymond Schwertfager.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia. The Rev. Mary Krahn, will officiate. Burial will be in the Webster Street Cemetery, Fredonia.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
