Our opinion: Bullying and us

There has been a lot of talk lately about bullying. And, that’s a good thing. It’s something everyone, not just parents and children, should talk about....

I worry for the bullies as much as I do for the bullied. They are at ends of a spectrum where in the middle, there are important elements of upbringing missing.

I agree with the fact that we will never be able to eliminate bullying as it is human nature. With that in mind, maybe, we should be focusing our helping our children build confidence so that the bullying does not affect them as strongly. We need to teach them that it is the bully that is wrong, not them. They need to understand the reasons people bully (no guidance at home, emotional problems, low self esteem) so that our kids don't let that bully win. I remember in grade school my girls started hearing about bullying and THEN started seeing it happening to the point that they said there was no bullying until the school started these programs (I realize that was not true but it could be said that bringing attention to the bullying forced them to notice it more). Maybe a solution is to help children realize their own self worth and help them become emotionally stronger. We need to stop fighting a losing battle .

"Basic parenting is the responsibility of parents. Unfortunately some parents - too many parents - abdicate that responsibility, expecting society to do it for them." - I couldn't agree more.
