Health care

October 3, 2013

Dear editor: I’d like to thank Mr. Thompson and Mr. Kelly by not voting against the new health plan. By doing this they have created a tough life for my grandaughter....

Obviously has no idea what obama care actually has written in it! We don't want it we don't need it and we sure don't want a fine for not getting it!

well it is almost here.....unless a miracle happens in congress........don't hold your breath.........I am certain there will be more insane stuff coming down....... Your hospital Medicare admittance has just changed under Obama Care. You must be admitted by your primary Physician in order for Medicare to pay for it! If you are admitted by an emergency room doctor it is treated as outpatient care where hospital costs are not covered. This is only the tip of the iceberg for Obama Care. Just wait to see what happen in this year and 2014! I have a whole list, but I guess we are limited on how long a post can be here

* Page 50/section 152: The bill will provide insurance to all non-U.S. residents, even if they are here illegally. ** Page 58 and 59: The government will have real-time access to an individual's bank account and will have the authority to make electronic fund transfers from those accounts. ** Page 65/section 164: The plan will be subsidized (by the government) for all union members, union retirees and for community organizations (such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now - ACORN). ** Page 203/line 14-15: The tax imposed under this section will not be treated as a tax. (How could anybody in their right mind come up with that?) ** Page 241 and 253: Doctors will all be paid the same regardless of specialty, and the government will set all doctors' fees. This is what they do in Sweden too. I know because Alf's daughter Ann is an OBGYN, and her husband, Thorsten, is a surgeon.........

Those on Social Security will be required to attend an "end-of-life planning" seminar every five years. (Death counseling..) ** Page 429, line 13-25: The government will specify which doctors can write an end-of-life order. HAD ENOUGH????

I am overwhelmed by the lunacy of this "law of the land", and perplexed that some ppl still want this fiasco. Why do they want Free America destroyed? Patrick Henry is rolling over in his grave.

Jimmy1 - It is a known fact there is fraud in admissions in many hospitals by emergency room doctors having to get their quota. I think it is a good change and should save the govt. money. Under the new plan, I heard, in time, there will be no donut hole for those that need a lot of meds. I personally feel it's about time people get insurance for working 30 plus hours a week. I know it is hard for you old people to realize what it is like to work hard at 2 or more jobs and receive no medical coverage. After all, during your working years, you had insurance and didn't have to contribute to it. By the way, anybody know how Romneycare is doing in Mass.?

@guitbanger: I agree with you. It is true that it seems like the people who lived in the "golden age" who had insurance entitlements during their working years are the ones who don't think working people in this country deserve decent medical care.

More LIES to be considered: if you are uninsured and succumb to a life-threatening ailment, Medicaid will be there for you. LIE. If you earn more than $200/month, you're screwed. LIE #2: if you pay the hospital at least $10 month, your hospital bill will not go to collection. TRUTH: Many uninsured working people in this country will ignore the chest pains until it's too late.

I'm ok if you disagree with obamacare. But please do it for the right reasons and do not spread lies, it only hurts your cause:

Please tell me, are those of you who don't want to participate willing to die when you get sick by refusing care? Or, do you expect the rest of us to take care of you? You will get sick. Requiring people to have coverage protects us from your health care costs and you from mine. Just like required car insurance protects you from my driving problems. You don't have to participate, but if you don't we will collect a tax penalty so that when you do get sick and can't afford to pay $100,000, the taxpayers will have at least recovered something from you to help pay. That is called being responsible for yourself. If you are low income, we will help you cover your costs. This law is an attempt to get as many coverage as possible. It's not perfect, but it's finally something. To not have equal access to health care in a civilized country is inconceivable and morally wrong. The more people on insurance, the better deals we can get from care and product providers. Individuals can't do that.

Rancor, I'll give you one thing that is absolutely TRUE. Obama promised to fundamentally change America, and that he IS doing. We used to be free, but are now rapidly changing to a PURE socialist state. It used to be if you wanted insurance, you worked, earned a living and purchased insurance. NOW, Obama has altered that paradigm. You don't have to do a darned thing in life. Just sit there, breathe and have a pulse. Uncle Sugar will feed, clothe, and shelter you. Now you get FREE medical care, courtesy of those who are still dumb enough to work, just to have the fruits of their labor confiscated to support the slugs. I do believe in supporting those who TRULY can't support themselves. But we have become a nation of fraudulent slacks. What's next, "ObamaTrans" to ensure that EVERYONE has a car?

"That is called being responsible for yourself." I'm sorry BrookP, but that flies in the face of the Socialist handbook. Go back and look it up. It says, "Gimme, gimme, gimme."

Stonewall, you missed my point about it being immoral to deny equal access to health care based on your income. This ONE issue is more important than socialism or capitalism. Everyone should have equal access to prevent death. None of us hardworking people like the slackers and most of us do want to lend a hand up to those truely needing it. But, those are separate issues. You don't trash a whole system because a part of it isn't working. You fix it, i.e. better enforce the rules to prevent slackers from benefitting.

"This ONE issue is more important than socialism or capitalism."

This one step, the ACA, is a huge leap from Capitalism toward Socialism.

"You fix it, i.e. better enforce the rules to prevent slackers from benefitting."

The current system is nearly broken by the "slackers" and the ACA is like giving the "slackers" steroids. The laws are not being enforced now.

BrookP, I'll concede that everyone should have access to adequate healthcare. The problem is that those with their hands out have been so accustomed to just having everything provided sans limitations, that they don't even try. I have seen first-hand those who go to the Emergency Room for a common cold, a headache, or some other minor affliction. They don't care. They have no "skin in the game". It cost them nothing. ObamaCare will do nothing more than exacerbate this notion. This "law" WILL fail, and it WILL take America down with it. As I've said before, when this happens, you will not be able to find ONE person with the guts to admit that they supported it. Mark my words, then rub it in my face when the ACA succeeds with flying colors. I triple-dog dare ya!!

st0newall, I think we can all agree on a few points.

1. The current system of healthcare is fundamentally broken.

2. There are those who will game the system.

3. There are those who truly deserve help from The People.

I will agree that the ACA is not adequate to solve all three of these issues. However, maintaining the status quo will not solve these issues either.

So, what can we do to solve these problems?

Rancor, I agree with all 3 of your points. The answer?? I don't know. I DO know that forcing Americans do buy something which they don't want is NOT the answer. More socialism is NOT the answer. Penalizing freedom is NOT the answer. I think we should start be holding insurance companies accountable and making them fulfill their obligations. They are right there, happy to receive premiums, but very resistive and slow to make payouts. Just yesterday I finished a fight where my wife's insurance finally paid for routine exam/lab tests. I know that they're in business to make money. It's a gamble. They bet you won't get sick, and you bet that you will. All too frequently they balk when they lose the bet. Have a nice day. It's gonna be a beauty.

It appears that we agree that everyone should have equal access to healthcare. Since no one else has a better plan to present to the citizens, then we implement the plan that has been passed by a duly-elected legislature, and tested in the courts. Will it need tweaking along the way? Most likely. But at least we are trying something instead of nothing.

MTO, you said "This one step, the ACA, is a huge leap from Capitalism toward Socialism." My point was that equal access to healthcare is above capitalism versus socialism. It's the morally correct thing to do, no matter how one side or the other classifies it.

It is precisely that argument that leads to Socialism.

So then, does that mean that you believe capitalism is more important than the health of a person? Are you in favor of people not having equal access to not die?
