Skate Park remains popular

June 17, 2013

When the Warren Skate Park opened in 2010, those who brought the vision to a reality hoped it would provide an outlet for young people in the community. For four summers, it has done just that....

I enjoy watching the young people do their tricks and skills at the park, and hope it remains operational. It's a nice place and there are many respectful citizens that use it. I had my doubts at first, city council was very negative toward the park.

Yep, city council was very negative towards it, to the point where the park could actually be better than it is but council had their input and wanted to make it so it could be moved away. They felt because nobody would use it. I laugh everytime I drive by there, there isn't a section of park in Warren used more than that skate park.

Hopefully this will get rid of the anti-change negativity that permeates Warren and there will be more support for bike-hike trails, the proposed trail system at Jakes Rocks, and more local gov't pressure to allow volunteers to expand trail systems on the ANF without million dollar NEPA studies. Lord knows many miles of OGM roads go in every month without any NEPA study, the bureaucratic naysayers need some guidance from the people they serve.

I wish the kids would wear helmets.

After four years, it appears that the skate park has become a community asset while helping encourage physical activity and prevent childhood obesity. This park is well received inspite of all the doubt and misconceptions about our youth who particate in these sports. It took 15 years to convince our city officials that we needed a skate park, and the park has served the community well. However, it is being used by small children on trikes with their parents, teens, and young adults of various skill levels and types of equipment -- all in the same area and at the same time. The park that was to be built could have served those groups appropriately. Maybe the park needs to be revisited and the park expanded. Hold that thought.....
