In reading the court transcript, Melvin's defense claimed prosecutorial misconduct. In one instance, a witness was asked to identify documents that save for the cover page had nothing to do with the trial. It goes on and on. Melvin claimed all along that Allegheny County DA, Steve Zapalla engaged in a political vendetta. It appears that while the case evidence was strong enough for a conviction, most of the damning testimony could be viewed as hearsay at best. If one reads between the lines, Melvin's sentence may very well indicate skepticism from Judge Nauhaus even though he chided Melvin at sentencing.
