A Plastic Problem

Hufnagel’s departure coincided with card ‘mistake’ at casino

March 27, 2013

When former Warren County School District Superintendent Brandon Hufnagel left the district after less than two years of a five-year contract he may have felt pressure to get out....

Just because he left doesn't mean you stop looking into more possible "errors" in the use of the card. If that's all it takes to end they type of investigation there would be a lot of people who would just quit their jobs.

I agree that the board should have been more upfront with taxpayers regarding this issue, however, I do understand the hesitancy. What I don't understand is why WTO put the word mistake in quotations, suggesting a more sarcastic tone, rather than outright quoting Mr. Hufnagel. I could forgive one mishap, but six? All were willful choices. I'm glad he's made restitution on the matter but I wonder what safeguards the board will consider for future superintendents will be.

I agree writer that's what got to me in the article as well. The should continue to complete the review!

While this could possibly have simply been a mistake. It also seems possible he maxed his other cards and that gambling bug had the best of him so he used his WCSD card.

Interesting that he resigned, which begs the question... what else was he trying to avoid being uncovered?

I realize this could be as presented but it smells very fishy.

It is clear from the timeline of the excutive board sessions that Brandon had verbally resigned Jan 25.Once might be an accident, this wasn't once. Our school board may have stopped its investigation as he walked out the door but I'm betting our state auditor general won't....

I did this once myself. Stupid mistake; from then on, I carried my company credit card on the other side of my wallet. But I did it ONCE, and it was for a vacuum cleaner, not a casino debt. Sheesh.

As always, the school board let's the public know what's going on not promptly, but in their own time.

The school district should also look into safeguards for employee credit cards, as do many companies these days. Banks have the ability to block credit cards from being used at certain types of businesses such as casinos, adult entertainment venues, liquor stores, etc.

Why is the school district issuing a credit card that allows you more than 2 cash advance transactions in one day; let alone 6?? Sounds like they need to put stiffer limits on the cards they issue!

It seems if he could spend almost $6000 on one day at the casino he could fly from Bradford to York to spend time with his family several times. His whole story sounds fishy!

Speaking of the SAG, what news is there for the GROWarren investigation? That has been a while.

Space lady...they didn't investigate! This is a follow up to his letter because of other right to know requests that have been submitted to the district. We need the district audit done again and we need one that includes every day until his resignation!

I have a question...if it was only a mistake and you have a young family, do you ruin your career over a mistake? Or do you own up to the mistake, face consequences, try to recover, and continue in your career until you find something close to home that within your experience? When you have a young family, you don't abruptly end your career over mistakes. He can kiss being a superintendent again goodbye!

...AND if he was missing his family so much why was he spending the weekend at a casino instead of in York with his family? I've driven further than the York area for one day events, if family was so important, he would have been home instead of at a casino!

he made a mistake would be understandable since he said the card looks similar to another card he keeps in his wallet, but he made 6 mistakes, not one, so I agree that all of his expenses should be audited Casino vs home with wife and family kinda contradicts the resignation reason.

I personally find Hufnagel's cute letter insulting. A simple short resignation would have been sufficient, if anything at all. My attitude about this matter also extends to Stewart and his board. Disgusting. Why are the taxpayers just finding out about this months later??

"Just because he left doesn't mean you stop looking into more possible "errors" in the use of the card."

It doesn't take long to review less than 2 years worth of credit card statements for one person. I would venture to guess that the board and CO administration did that right off the bat before allowing him to pay restitution. (There'e an aweful lot of time between January 24th and February 5th) There isn't a point to continue to investigate further if you have already done the investigation.

"how did this go from an employee issue to what kind of family man he is?!" I believe one is directly related to the other.

Then I would only have to conclude, peeon, that you would not mind your employer (assuming you have one) interrogating you on your relationship with your wife, how you discipline your children, the reasons for your divorce (if you had one) and using the answers to qualify or disqualify you for continued employment. I mean, since they are directly related to your job and your job performance.

I do not think this man is capable of telling the truth about anything. Art Stewart states that he contacted Brandon to see if the card was in his possession or if he had lost it. Then Hufnagel says that he contacted the board after he realized his 6 mistakes of using the district card at the casino. How can anyone make the same "mistake" six times in one day??? They need a outside audit done on all of Hufnagels expeneses for his 18 months of "service?"

It will be all covered up in the long run. This guy got caught this time, how many others have pulled similar stunts and not been caught. This school district needs a complete detailed itemized audit for the taxpayers to review. There has been in the past a "fudging" of figures and it will continue. They just raise taxes to cover their jobs. Afterall, WCSD is second largest employer in the county, (the shrinking county" but need these 4 highschools and all the future years of debts, tax raises, to keep these people in their jobs. How can this administration be justified with decisions like this? Who else has a blank check credit card?

25or624 if I have a job or not is none of your business. I was speaking of his character. Someone who even gives the impression of being this dishonest doesn't have much character.
