Immigrants

March 7, 2013

Dear editor: Immigrants, not Americans, must adapt. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept....

OK -but come on Gary, Jefferson got this one right. "truth is great and will prevail if left to herself". This is poetry in defense of freedom of expression and conscience. Nothing like this was being put into law 230 years ago outside of the United States. This ideal has served us well.

FIXED-

If you really want to know what our founding fathers believed about the seperation of church and state Google "The Virginia Act For Establishing Religious Freedom", written in 1786 by Thomas Jefferson.

So, are you saying that our money should buy UN votes? Hmm, I give money to several organizations. Must be they need to do what I tell them to do, then.

Never mind NATO, What about our funding of the UN? WE pay most of the costs, and the UN votes against us time and time again. Now that's a group that scares me. THAT's why I'm armed.

We fund NATO, what "benefits" do we get for that?

Give up a little sovereignty to receive "member" benefits from organizations like NATO, WTO, NAFTA, etc.

Good topic.

The immigrants whom I know celebrate the American culture. They are grateful to find jobs to support their families, be safe from political repression, and breathe clean air. They would likely not be here if they had those opportunities in their homeland. Think the price they pay by leaving their family and friends.

Chuck, you write "This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle."

Yes, our nation, our culture, was built on and continues to be strengthened by the multicultural community that we are. Different perspectives help us problem-solve in a rapidly changing world. Our strength.

Sovereignty is different. Each nation is its own "decider." But, with greater interaction between sovereign nations, a country chooses to give up a little sovereignty to receive member benefits like those from NA

Hmmm, based on all the "disagrees" to my comments, we have many people who are against the Constitution of the United States. Interesting. I wonder how many of those disagree persons fiercely support the right to bear arms, but think other points of the Constitution are ok to overlook, oh, say, like the part about government not promoting one religion over another? Cherry picking the Constitution to one's own benefit is an interesting concept, these day.

Stonewall, so because there is a capital G, it must mean the "true" god, which you will determine? Sorry, there at least a 100 capital G gods around, according to the various religions. You have no basis to lay claim to the "true" god definition more than any other religion.

Stonewall, there are three Abrahamic religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Christians do not have exclusive title to Abraham or this nation.

We all know that immigrants naturally group together. There are Chinatowns in large cities of America. Great! Speak their native tongue in their own homes and when speaking with other like immigrants. But LEARN ENGLISH and read, speak, and write it when dealing with other Americans who have also immigrated here and LEARNED ENGLISH. My great-great grandparents came from Alsace-Lorraine. When they arrived in 1851, they spoke french and german. They also LEARNED ENGLISH and spoke it with their Swedish neighbors. They became Americans, not Franco-Americans or German-Americans. They MELTED and embraced free America. Today Hyphenated-Americans rule this nation.

BTW, there is an aluminum (more valuable than gold at the time it was made) cap on the very top of the Washington monument. There are two words engraved on the east-facing side of that cap, "Laus Deo". In ENGLISH that would be, "Praise God". Note that is God with a capital G. That means the God of Abraham, the one TRUE God. This once WAS a Christian nation, but not any more. We have been lazy and let false gods (small g) take over, and you all can see how that has improved us as a nation. We are paying the price.

"To work in a brewery in America 100 year ago it was often required to understand German so that you could communicate with the German-born managers and foremen," GaryP, I didn't think that you were that old. Let's all go to the basement and dig up those 100 year old products that were found on grocery store shelves. You know, the ones that had ENGLISH, Italian, German, French, Russian, etc. writing all over them. You know, like the SPANISH that's all over every product that you pick up today. The multi-language labels that add cost to every product just so we can be multi-cultural, and ILLEGAL immigrants won't have to learn ENGLISH. They won't have to "melt". They get to import their culture and change American culture.

After reading the very first comment, I think someone should change their name to "ANARCHYrules", or "THEREareNOrules". Do what ya wanna do. Forget the "melting pot". Do NOT conform. Immigrants left their old country why? If they were so thrilled with their old way of life they should have stayed there. If they want to be AMERICANS, they should conform to our society, including speaking our language, ENGLISH. Now, on to reading the other comments.

Our founders wrote the separation of church and state into the constitution to ensure that our country is never governed by an unelected religious figurehead such as the Pope or an Imam. I do not believe the founders ever meant that we were to deny the existence of God.(Christian or otherwise). Our immigration process is governed by political interests. The Hispanic lobby in the U.S. holds incredible influence over both parties. We tip-toe around the Russians and the Chinese because of our international political interests. I have to agree that dividing America into a dozen or more sub-cultures will weaken us. Go to Iran or China and see how long you'd stay out of jail while asserting your religious or political values on their societies.
