Our opinion: Flying on Uncle Sam

Pick an airport facility central to the region (Jamestown) and make it a real airport capable of serving the region. Warren, Bradford and surrounding area to Jamestown is nothing in terms of travel time or distance. It takes an hour+ to get to JFK from the city. What you have here is the same situation as the post service. Too many offices, not enough mail.

OMG, have the feds closed U.S. Route 219? Are there road blocks on Route 6? If we had a road that served only 10 cars per day, would we plow it in the winter? Isolation? Really?

The point is that the presence of the Bradford Airport is important to this area's infrastructure; not that it is a "private business". It's interesting that people think that this area should be an "island" and only supported by our shrinking and aging population. Just what we need--isolationism.

Private aircraft ownership in Alaska is 1 in 6 people. Considering that most of the population lives in larger cities, like Anchorage, and that ownership among native Alaskans is low, the ratio increases dramatically for the people living in outlying areas.

Having been there, you will see planes in people's back yards with their own or small community private airstrip.

The average aircraft ownership in the lower 48 is about 1 in 400.

Dear folks, as I commented before, I thank Thompson for his support of the Bradford airport. If any of you happen to watch the Alaska Air program on TV, everything there is supported by the Federal Government. If the Federal support didn't exist, most of Alaska would be totally isolated, which is what "theMattMobile" means. I agree. One more thing along that line--remember the F5 tornadoes of 1986? That is the reason we should all support the "Sandy" aid.

There isn't enough money "close to home" as you put it. We get nearly all our public project money from taxpayers in higher population areas with higher incomes. We're a bunch of freeloaders!!!!

I wouldn't have any problem with our own area funding our own projects as long as our tax dollars would stay in our own area and not be used to fund other wasteful government projects in other areas of the country that we get no benefit from. The closer to home you keep your own money the more wisely it will be used.

I think we forget what airports represent to our infrastructure.Sure,if you account for passenger usage at times, Bradford may seem like a waste of money but in fact, it is the potential need that we should be focused on. As we watch our local industries relocate one by one, does it make sense to isolate N.W. Pa. even more? I felt that when Warren County abandoned the airport authority we made a mistake. Let's use I-86 as a perfect example. I have been repeatedly thankful for the convenience of that highway on my many medical trips to Erie. I am very surprised by the lack of traffic on it at times, particularly eastbound from Erie to Jamestown. Should we close that part of it? If you guage its need by useage alone, we should return the land to pasture.

I wonder if the government would pay me some tax payers dollars to run a sock store in downtown Warren. No chance that it will make it on it's own, but with government assistance I could make it happen.
