Local jobless rate up, labor pool grows

...and then, some folks just don't want to work. I've personally been told by more than a few that they are only working long enough to be eligible for more unumployment benefits. (But don't tell that to upper management!) I have to constantly deal with ppl "calling off" of work for the weakest of reasons. The gov't makes it just too easy for ppl to not work. Don't show up for work, earn less, and then be eligible for food stamps, LIHEAP, TANF, free school lunches, EIC and other benefits. I think you'd see a lot different attitude if it was "If you want to eat, you have to work," but not in the good old USA these days.

Hey stOnewa11, don't assume that everyone who is not working does not want to be! Six months ago, we went from a two income household to a one income household through no choice of our own. Because one of us is still working, we do not qualify for any of the entitlements you listed. We are desperate to get back to a two income household, but the few jobs out there that are available would bring in less than unemployment does. It's very sad.

That't my point exactly, WG. The govt's (federal, state and local) make it more beneficial/desireable to just sit around and collect vs actually earning a wage. Perhaps I painted a picture with too broad a brush. I'm sure that there are some who really want to work, but they are a small minority. I just spoke from what I've seen/encountered. No offense intended.
